Thanks folks. I hope to get the rolling chassis pushed out into the daylight at the weekend and start prepping the underside of the body, so that it can go back on for the final time.

A few more shots from today. I decided to spend some time on filling the holes in the firewall and improving the recess a bit. 95FDB8E4-17E5-4F9C-AE69-ADA596720F44.jpeg 62532CBE-970F-4E31-9E98-418332E6BB1A.jpeg 8DF69AF8-15CD-449B-987D-22A46CBB9B84.jpeg 3BE70A19-E40D-48B3-A8C3-5FFD10A3CDD5.jpeg 3C9EE295-F31C-4F06-A5D7-3CC106BEE136.jpeg 67EF89FB-4BDB-4FA0-822D-FA502EB6478F.jpeg

The seat wasn’t back in yet, so I found an old crate to sit on!

Thanks guys. I'm still working on buttoning everything back up. There are loads of little bits that take so long. It will be a while before I get round to wiring the lights and gauges up and hit the road, but it's quite satisfying to be at this stage. Here are some stills of how she looks with the body on. Since these were taken I have got the windshield and steering wheel back in. I have also had to play around with the rear spring pack a bit - trimmed the second as I missed that issue first time round, and added one short leaf to the top of the pack. I have a problem with the fuel filler neck and have made up a better adaptor in the lathe to improve the strength of the connection.

Next I will fit the seat and floor, then move on to the trunk lid/skin and the wooden body frame. Rear shock mounts are still on the water somewhere!

  12. That has been a neat journey, thanks for bringing us along. So the rear ride height has been accomplished by placing the spring behind the axle? How much does this change the original wheel base if at all.

Thanks for following along. The wheelbase stays the same. The frame is extended (by abour 4" I think), so that the rear crossmember sits behind the axle, rather than above it. I think it gives about a 4" drop in frame height.

I got some toys out at the weekend for a BBQ with some of my mates. the Model A made it's debut, albeit no yet fit for road driving. I did few miles round the paddock :)

Nice little collection! What's the story with the other's? It's a great feeling being able to bomb about after all that work!

Very cool, I sent the photo to a mate who is building both a 46 Chev pick up & a model A trunkster & has some parts he was talking about putting aside for a Sprint car/speedster.

I'll check out your pick up thread too. Keep up the good work!

What a cool hot rod. Simple and straight forward but still full of details. Great job so far.

Shock mounts arrived and so I got them welded on.

And I got to spend some time with my Godson last weekend, so he came and helped me with some little jobs on the coupe. We got the body bolted down properly on some wooden blocks, re-bled the brakes (it was nice to have a helper on the pedal for that!), adjusted the steering/tracking as best we could and also made up a little steering stop for the left hand drum to keep the front tyre away from the drag link. We threaded the end of the kingpin locking nut to accept a 5/8" UNF nut and turned the outside of the nut down on the lathe.

    Archie making steering stop.jpg
Then we cut the head off an old stainless steel spoon to make a throttle pedal pad. It still needs some sanding and a polish, but he got to try out a few different techniques that he hadn't seen before - tapping threads, heating and bending, turning, filing and measuring.

    Throttle pedal pad1.jpg

    throttle pedal pad2.jpg
He's 11yo and his family farm livestock, but he is pretty keen on machinery. He is coming back again soon to see some more stuff.

I still have a very long list of jobs to complete before I can hit the road and have suffered a few setbacks of late - leaking rear hub seal (my fault caused by an error with assembly) and I found that the front spring was a bit too long and hit the wishbone. I swapped to a 31.1/4" reverse eye spring and now have full travel.

    Still need to do:
    Wiring lights and gauges
    Toe board & trim
    Trunk slam panel
    Trunk lid frame and skin
    Body/roof wood
    Fuel filler neck
    Set up carbs
    Engine cover/bonnet
(plus lots of otehr things that crop up along the way)

Unfortunately there is no way I am going to get the car ready in time for Pendine as I had hoped this year, but I am enjoying ticking things off the list and it's getting shorter all the time.

Cool to see a young guy in the shop. Planting the seeds for the future. Keep chipping away at that list.

  22. I’m gonna take wild guess and say that he’s your project supervisor, right?

Archie is keen to come back for another go. He asks loads of questions and really makes me think twice (when maybe I normally wouldn't) about what I am doing and why. So, yes I guess project supervisor is a good title for him!

Here’s another little video of some test driving with my girls. Door latching is now sorted!

Thanks Tim. It doesn't need a stereo - it has it's own soundtrack!

At long last I think I have got the floor sorted. I found this but to be one of the most challenging parts of the project. Having used the oval Fordson recess in the firewall caused me a big headache and I just couldn’t visualise how to finish the toe board whilst making it look ok and have it easy to remove. I ended up making it in 3 parts (after 2 catastrophic attempts) - 2 x plywood floor halves and an alloy folded section to join it all together. I used more nutserts and mushroom screws. I’m happy with the look and it comes out in a couple of minutes to access anything I need to in future.
