The blue Vette and green Charger are two good examples of trick.... or I mean ick paint. Makes me glad I was there and so don't actually remember much of the 70s.

when I was 10 my friends older brother had a car like that
he had stacks of **** mags with all these chicks with hairy beavers
the guy had shoeboxes full of pot
he wore a feathered mullet, jean jacket with a maiden patch, and rocked some un laced pony high tops
he used to give us joints
sometimes he would let us watch his girlfriend in the shower
I full on blame this guy for how screwed up I am

    Funny you should say that...

This was airbrushed on my Mallock Racecar when I bought it. :)

Very cool paint job... Does ANYONE out there know how to paint like this anymore, or is it a lost art? I think there are lots of things that fall into the "lost art" category... Every now and then I do see some recent "lace" paint jobs, but that's about as wild as it gets. This kind of stuff amazes me... Are we less creative these days? Less capable? Too much time goofing off on the internet and watching TV to actually learn how do do something that takes craftsmanship???... Yes, I think so. But that's just me...

I can't help but wonder how many hours it took to do this. Anyone want to estimate a job like this? I don't know much about paint, except it's never cheap.

On the other hand, it is kind of tacky, by any standard. Nonetheless, I love it...

    Thanks for the pic.

Alot of work like that involves alot of airbrushing. My father still has 3 sets of tins from his knucklehead we are rebuilding that are close. Paneled with fades, with some airbrushed 3D shapes all over it. Really weird, but I dig it. He's the man with the airbrush, but I take care of the bug stuff. Sometimes we work together. We plan to put the tins back close to the way they were, with a few upgrades.

For one, I love most of that wacked 70's stuff. I have a job in the midst now that incorporates some, but not all of that and I can't wait.

Here is one for you guys if you are interested. My buddy picked it up last year and we are trying to figure out what to do with it. It was painted by Butch from Milwaukee in the 70's from what we understand so-far. The car was called the Fireman and was shown in the ISCA shows. I can get more pictures if anyone is interested. There is a lot of cool paintwork on it.

Hey!!! Whats up? I talked to my dad about that car and he said it was and still is owned by Joe and Jean Pretto of Columbia Il./St.louis. it was built by Joe for his wife Jean back then, and now thier oldest daughter has taken the helm. Pretty neat deal, but not my cup of tea.

I'm still looking for that guy with the cushman for ya. I'll pm ya with his number when i locate it. Talk to ya later

The Gold Nova to the right in the early picture I'm almost certain is the early version of the Gold Digger Nova, that was shown around St Louis, owned by Dan Eby. The last time I saw it had lots of custom paint and gold plated from end to end.

Dan totaled the original Nova, and built something else..another gold digger i heard..but cant remember what...i believe it was in the late 80s when he wrecked it..as soon as i saw the flairs i remebered the car..it was...wait for it...L E G E N D A R Y..in south St Louis when/where i grew up..

i know it spawned 10 other flaired novas...he was a hero to a lot of people....a street freak legend..I havent thought of him in years...ahhh..memories...just to ride in it or say ya knew him was an honor...and it was hidious back n the 80s, but as time softens memories..i think it was pretty cool...thinking about it i think but not sure a duster was the latest version of Gold Digger..i just cant remeber...life happened and i just didnt pay attention..

I dont remeber the camaro..i grew up in that area, and i lived and breathed cars...never saw it..

I remeber some cool cars...The Blue MAX 66 G***er chevelle....the Psycho Hemi Challenger....the Blown 44-too much Cutl***...from custom Jim...and he was the KING of weird paint..it was so exciting to see the next one...and the next one he built......and that dude smoked some rope like you wouldnt believe...memories i havent thought about in a long long time...i'm smiling....

Jim Ebenho (sp) was his full name loved earth tones...what we call them now..but browns and golds and every shade of brown and gold was used...root beer brown was his favorite..

He built some traditional sleds too..some 30s and 40s and a few 60s cars..some chopped stuff..he was a talented indivdual that could do some serious metal work...but his psycho paint made him popular, and he got a lot of magazine coverage too...

there where also some psychodelic cars that where locally famous...like the Boss Frog...a wildly green painted Pinto with a Boss 302..the first pro street supposidly in our area...

Fine wine..a mopar 69 b-body, i thnk a GTX..ive seen it but cant rember..it was silver with a lot of purple lace..really cool.....

then there was the US MALE...a midyear corvette..it was white with a stars and stripe wild *** fade job, 6 or 8 tail lights, with a supercharger so big the blower scoop was actually above the roof line...

a solid axle vette that was b*** boat flake siver and psycho designs on it..straight axle, car sat so high you had to climb up in it..i knew the cat that owned it but cant rember his name..he used the word "man" constantly...

a 63 Nova with slanted headlights, Duster taillights and a crazy paint job, years later, it was put back nearly stock, kept the tails and pro streeted....many of the old psycho hot rods evolved into pro street cars..way OT..but they evolved as the times changed...

and of cours Bill Weckmans blown midyear corvette..bright yellow...its in a museum supposidly now labeled as the fasted street car in the US....that was back in the 90s..im not sure about that now..its foggy...but i think thats right..

my memory isnt as good now as it was, and like i said time softens, morphs memories..

another famous car was Benny Hoffmans black blown g***er Willy's Coupe a 39 or 40..no hood..straight axle...that was a traditional hot rod to the "T"

Thanks guys for digging this one up....holy **** this brings back memories. My dad was a painter back then, and did tons of stuff like this, and huge flares on anything, especially Corvettes!! Panel paint jobs, ribbon work, lace, fades, tons of metal flake and spiderwebbing. We had a 64 Impala SS(tho not a lowrider) it was lowered, 5 spoke ETs, red paint, with silver down the sides and roof, and red spiderwebbing in the silver. I can still remember him doing the spiderwebbing in the back yard like it was yesterday, tho it was 1972 and I was 6......Great stuff!!!!!

I done one similar on a friends import awhile back, bet i had 12-14 hours in masking alone! Used numerous pearls for the color changes. It was alot of fun, but ALOT of work! Lucky for me he didnt want symmetrical designs from side to side! What ****ed was the car got totaled before i got pictures.

Long live '70s street freaks. Some truly were freaks but some were tasteful.
I'd like one somewhere in between.

I miss the 70's......simpler times. N50 tires on 5 spoke Cragars, wild paint and pin striping.....
