I tried to melt them using my built-in oven at home. I put another alum pan under it to catch the molten alum. the pan melted first. what am I doing wrong?

nobody seems to want them in their present condition, so I am going to try to add some fins. I have cut strips of alum and gonna JB Weld them. i'll let you know how it turns out.

it's workin pretty good. I covered some of the head bolt holes, but there are a lot of them and you probably don't need to use them all.
