Is the value of a high-rise Thickstun higher if it has the original paint as opposed to a non-painted intake? Or does it not matter? I'm thinking of running this intake, but prefer the bare aluminum look, so im thinking of taking it off? 1000017487.jpg

I think they were all bare aluminum when new, someone painted that sometime in the last 75 or so years... yeah get the paint off of it, I would

The red paint is original, and yes it’s worth more. I had one just like it maybe twenty years ago, and sure wish I’d never sold it.

The earlier version came painted green. The Tattersfield (similar to Thickstuns) came painted hammertone blue.

I was wondering if the original paint added value! , thanks! Might have to go up on a shelf for now.

If I was buying, it’d add at least a hundred. And I’m a cheapskate.

So the red original is worth what, another 40 bucks or are we talking about an extra $800. If the former, toss it in the blast cabinet. If the latter, toss it on ebay.

If it only adds a hundred and I wanted a bare one, I would strip it, but don't go by me, I don't care for the whole patina look as a rule

Don't even think about taking that paint off. That is an original Tommy Thickstun intake and it came from the factory with that red paint on it. That intake is worth much more with the paint left on it. Collectors will pay a lot extra just to get an original like the one you have. Original paint will add $300 to $400 extra to the price.

For as old as it is, the paint is actually in really good shape, just needs some cleaning from the dirt on it.

Maybe someone here would trade you a naked one for the painted one.

why not paint the engine to match the manifold and use it ?
(cool parts sitting on a shelf look cool, but not as cool as cool parts being used on a car……:)…).

Not a big fan of Red, but very true about it just sitting on the shelf. might just have to suck it up and do the engine red.

I have a bare aluminum one (actually 2) if you want to trade. I have some original paint cast iron thickstun heads I wouldn't mind matching.

    Keep me in mind

If u are looking for more power, the tall cool looking Thickstun is a loser. The Edelbrock slingshot had nearly 20 more h.p. on a built engine. IMG_1608.jpeg IMG_1609.jpeg IMG_1611.jpeg

Actually, that was my next question: Any suggestions on cleaning it without removing the paint?

Soap and water and a soft bristled brush?
Doesn’t look like oil/ gas stained.

I think it’s cam and displacement dependent, cuz I’ve seen a motor on the dyno give opposite results.

If the motor had that two-piece oil pan on it when you picked it up, you lucked out all around.
