I had a friend that did this..he never had anything stolen..(maybe why i dont know) but i asked him about it once and he said it helped him keep track of his tools while helping and lending to others, and he just caried it on over to his parts. He gave me a few things one day while i was on a project..pump pullies and a few odds and ends..and low and behold there was his name and a series of numbers...

definetly..i always returned his stuff..but some of his other "friends" probably didn't, and he worked in shops where shit would come up missing..
and what he gave me to keep (because he didnt need it any more) had some of the markings too. Ive horse traded with this friend for over 30 years..hes got my stuff, ive got his..but what we give away to the other is understood that its given..unless expressed as..I will need this back when your done with it.

Sorry back on track..lets catch these bastards!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How much fuel left in the running truck when found near Midway Rd.? Possibly near a place with security cameras? Any witneses see another tow vehicle parked near there prior to the finding of the stolen truck?

there was a story in easyrider a long time ago, about a guy who's bike had been stolen. he found what looked like his parts at a swap meet, freshly primered. picks up the tank and finds "HD" stamped somewhere on the bottom, the guy tells him that's harley's marking....

it turns out, those are the guy's initials! SURPRISE ENDING!1!

This company has an inexpensive service that may meet most needs. I'm going to bring this up to my Father as he has a Pebble Beach winning Auburn Boattail and is closing in on the completion of his restoration of a L29 Cord.

I would hide the device in the most importent vehicle. The truck and trailer are dime a dozen usually and insurence will get you a similar replacement. Getting back the car you poured your heart, soul and blood into, is another story.

Since the car is the real target, even if they dump the truck/trailer you can still track the car. Plus who would think to check it over for a locator device? They probably would, but if you hide it well enough you could be okey.

I think a two pronged approach would be effective. First an alarm system that pages you. Make it audible if you want to try to scare them away or silent if you want to assess the situation and possibly deploy some personal first hand, don't need the police involved, kind of justice (severe, oak axe handle, beaten to the last moment of your life kind of stuff...you may want a gun as I'd bet they are armed...). Second a GPS tracking option in case they get away before you can arrive "on scene". That way someone can track while you chase.

This one also uses satelite. More expensive I'm sure. But it's all about how much you want to spend to track what's yours.

Back when I was in trucking we used Qualcomm satellite tracking on the OBCs on the trucks, a transponder on the container frames and on our trailers. I could pull up my board and see that the right driver was logged on to the right truck, where he was on his calls and breaks (we slipseated a lot), that he was hooked to the right trailer or container frame with the right container. One guy on my board (102 drivers) would get a little truck stop tail and cover his satellite transponder with foil. I never told him that it caused his truck to suddenly go from the Joliet drop yard to Sauget, IL (the default) instantly and I always knew he was at the Love's on 55. I had another driver that was there go over and knock on his door once to ask him for directions to a pick up

Funny as shit. I hope the Willys is found soon it would be a shame to see a steel car just disappear.

  17. Stay with me on this... and believe me I feel for Paul, as I've had my tow rig hit while at a racing event (Believe it or not theives got into my crewcab a couple years ago and stole the DVD set-up and the case of dvd's, about 200.00 worth of my two daughters cartoons and kids movies... get this, they went through the center consel and glove box, but left behind my cell phone AND over 50.00 in change... Targeted hit, I guarantee it!).

As tedious (?) as it seems, the marking of ALL your parts (body included) is what we have been relagated to do out here in the farmland of Central Callifornia on ALL our AG related equipment, from disc to 4-wheelers to chain saws and generators. The program is part of the county sheriffs association AG task force (state, local and federal officers), as theives over the years have been stealing and disassembling, then selling at swap meets or sending the equipment south of the border.

The feather in the cap of this "You want it on EVERY part ??" has been a surprisingly high recovery and conviction rate. Of course, that's also attributed to the AG task force actively assigning officers to all valley swap meets, including the "Auto" swaps, where you can be assured of seeing at least a couple of groups of task force officers accompanied by B.A.R. detectives (Bereau of Automotive Repair). I have personally seen a couple of these guys handcuffing a couple of sellers right in front of everybody, and a van come in and confiscate all their items.

So, I'd say as our social environment seems to changing, regarding those "fans" attending automotive functions, for those of us from out of town, and especially from out of state, participating in races or shows... Mark it before you go.

P.S. Regarding graphics on cars and trailers, I've been told by numerous law enforcement types, that the more unique you make your tow rig and trailer (open or enclosed), and race vehicle, you improve your chances by up to 60% that theives will bypass it.

P.S.S. I just remembered that I had one friend that went as far as removing the wheels off one side of his trailer and jack standing it, and then seperating the trailer from the tow rig just enough to put a ball lock on the hitch (he had a good 40k invested). And, yes he brought the wheels in his hotel room. I'll admit that in 25 yrs he's never had anyone mess with his trailer or its contents.

  18. my buddy had is generator stole off the side of his trailer while he sat in the staging lanes..Go figure..

Gasser Girl...we crossed paths several times during the weekend..Had a little lady in tow LOL

both my kids had trucks stolen,in az.and the tow co. had one of em (f-250 4x4),thay tried to reg. it and got cought!!my son got that one back after a year and a half!tow co. had been using it,and there was 8 differant trailer hitches in the bed when he got it back, ford trucks are very easy to get into through the door handle so be careful and a hidden kill switch is the best deal ,as soon as a new alarm or theft deterrant comes out someone is already figuring out a way to bypass it,also they wrap a chain around the trailer frame and the hitch on there truck and drag away the trailer!! oh yeah the other truck( f-150) was found at the mex.border

Man i feel for them badly i have had one vehicle broken into . Hope the theifs get slammed at one point .

My thought to detour theft of trailers would be a economical tire boot like the citys use . This would be one headache to try and remove and driving away impossible . Now someone with design and cash flow get some out there for us cheap . This would sell like hotcakes on Sunday morning .

Have been following this thread with interest. Seems like a lot of this stuff going on. Old news, but 2 very good friends both lost 32 hiboy roadsters from the Sheraton parking lot at the LA Roadster show a few years back. Late at night; just walked up and pushed 'em into trailers. Bold as brass. Also just talked to another friend who's buddy lost his car from the same hotel lot. It was discovered by an ATV bunch out in the desert; all covered over and hidden with branches or whatever. Suspect the theives were planning on coming back w/trailer to retreive it in a few days.

Those wheel chock gizzies look good to me.

We haven't heard from paul and pam in a couple of days. There are no new updates that we know of. We need to keep this going. We can't just let it hit the back burner.

I have read about a lot of thefts lately to high end tow rigs and trailers lately. There have been a lot of good sugestions on here about ways of slowing this down.

I have an idea to slow down trailer thefts. What about changin the wheel hubs on the trailer, to something custom, like 10 or 11 lug rims and having some one-off rims made for the trailer. Then at the hotel or where ever it's parked, remove the wheels and put the trailer on blocks, and put the wheels in the hotel room. Can't take a trailer with no wheels, and if the thieves happen to have a few spares, they won't fit on custom made hubs.

    Just a thought.

This really is a sad story and sad commentary on certain aspects of society. I'm glad the truck was recovered - and hoping to hear good news about the Willys too. Since the Willy community is tight Im sure they will follow this extra close. Id also be following , if at all possible , registration of any Willys in the ensuing months. Any new ownership should be under some scrutiny. If someone trys to get that thing legal and theres a way to prove otherwise Id try like hell to know for sure. The trail better check out. Just my 02. Ive had a car stolen before and when you want it back you think of all the angles no matter what. Again, sorry for the loss and good luck.

Bump...nothing new to report, except that Paul has gotten some good advice on more tactics to try, and he's heard back from people running speed shops and such...all on the lookout for anything that might be from the car showing up.
