Just a thought here, but I have seen pictures of some rather well known cars from the very early fifties with the raised Firestone markings painted either white or I have been told silver model paint. The first one that comes to mind is Bill Niekamps track nosed '29 at Oakland in '49. In my mind it would only work with the small, neat period logos on tires of that era, but it might be another look. Otherwise I would say p*** on the goofy super seventies looking RWL tires, and go black wall or at the most narrow whites. Just can't get my head around wide whites... way too "custom" for my tastes. Oh and Hemi - my "day two" '71 Maverick will soon be rockin' white letter radial T/As on it's polished slots... The seventies is where goofy lives!!!

  2. shoot me but i love that cuda it is soo refreshing to see one that has not been converted back to 100% stock just because its a mopar or a "HEMI CAR" or some other supposed 1of 1 rare car ...the whole reason i walked away from the mopar or no car crowd ...... no owner originallity or willing to step outside what everyone else thinks ....YAWN

and more o/t my 69 stang has 15" polished slots and RWL'S and even airshocks on it
soon it will have 15x10 polished slots on the back after i get em polished up hey i was born in 70 so this is what i grew up with

relax my 50 will have white walls just narrow ones but it will still have a sllight forward rake :D

  4. You could get raised white letter by the later '60s. But skinny whites is what you would have seen at school or even wide whites in that era.

I like skinny whitrs on the front and black walls on the rear if I am shooting for a highschool performance themed custom. Or even if I just have a warmed over sedan with the "I screwed with my Mom's car" look.

Granted I never screwed with my Mom's car,;) uh much.

i vote for the skinny whitewalls and a set of mini trim rings.

then you'll need some chrome scavenger pipes peeking out the back...

I remember my dad used to pick out the lettering on blackwall tyres in gold with a sort of gold wax crayon. This was probably mid to late '60s.

here's what i want; the cast of gilligan's island. gilligan and the skipper on the right front, mr and mrs howell on the right rear, the professor and mary ann on the left rear and ginger gets the left front all to herself.

The tires that 345 DeSoto posted would be just about right for 58-60. If you're going for period correctness, I would shoot for that whitewall size, or go for smaller to suit your tastes.

I'm normally a little bit of a stickler for period correctness ... but on that Shoebox, I think the early RWLs might actually look pretty cool.

Took you 4 tries to come up with 1 somewhat usable post!
Wonder if all those other 10 posts of you also contain the website you mention...

I wouldn't do RWL. Skinney whites or possibly the 1 1/2" whites. They were very popular in the 60's. Gary

i don't know about rwl, but painted letters have been around long before the 70's, we are talking 40's.

i am going to be running 7.50 biply firestone with painted letters on the rear of my 36 ford coupe.

  12. An inbetween tire was General's Dual 90. It had 3 very thin pinstripe white lines.
I had a set of recap Dual 90 drag slicks on the rear of my '57 BelAir hardtop in 1965.
    It looked the bomb!
I'm considering grinding the 3 thin lines onto my black wall hot rod sedan Model A tires then using some of Fonzie's magic whitewall paint to complete it.
My pals think I'm insane of course.

  15. I'm thinking very late '60s say in the neighborhood of '67-'68 but I have no hostorical fats to back that up just trying to remember.

I do know that even in that era a lot of us were still using tire marking chalk or tire markers to color the letters on our tires. that started becomming popular in the early to mid '60s for performance based cars as I recall. Again I have no historical facts to back that up just trying to remember.

For a stone cold early to mid '60s car I would either go with a pinner whitewall or a black wall depending again on the style of car I was building.
