If my memory is right it was Ralph Nader that started all the crap that led to vehicles having to be fitted with all the saftey stuff that we are now stuck with. Now I am not saying that safety stuff is all bad, but!! did you know that he was not alone in wanting the automobile to be made so safe that if you ran in to a jay-walker it would not hurt them. Well take a look at what might of happened . http://www.hotrodphotos.co.uk/pages/pages.GoodwoodFestivalOfSpeed2004/1957 Aurora prototype.htm And the write up in the times giving a bit of info about the car and it's history. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1536514,00.html So next time you bitch about seatbelts think of this one. ;D
That windshield sure looks like a safety item!! a while back here in the US a senator proposed putting safety belts on motorcycles...........turns out- he had never ridden one.
To think that thing actually started in America...I'm personally glad to see it on your side of the pond, Meester P... Thanx for the GoodWood pix...there are a few "ugly" cars in that bunch as well...guess there's no accounting for taste...anywhere in the world!!! R-
My God! It's still around! One strange factoiod I seem to recall the Aurora was designed by a priest. Duh! I just followed the link. I've got an old car book that has a section on this thing as well as a photo of the good father behind the wheel. Didn't anyone involved in it's creation ask "Is this the kind of priest who can really bring off a design or is he one of these true beleiving car designing preists ?" It looks like it escaped from Heironymous Bosch' painting "Hell"
Yeah, I'm not sure what to say about that one, and did you see the original suggested price? That's some serious coin for a car in the '50's. I remember the motorcycle seat belt thing too, yeah right. I just saw some european prototypes for a motorcycle airbag too. At least it looked like it helped, imagine still bein' strapped to that cycle while impacting anything.
wasn't there a jacket or something that would inflate in the event of you leaving the bike? seem to remember something like that. THAT i wouldn't have a problem with....
