Recently I acquired a 1940 Ford 2 Door Sedan. The grile that was on the car when I picked it up was what appeared to be the center section of a deluxe grille. It is 2 halves and they had it bolted to the fenders but it had the fenders pulled to close together because I thought it was missing the 2 outside panals.(grille in the 3rd pic) In the trunk was what appeared to me to be a standard grille which I bolted to the fenders and seemed to make thinks fit more correctly with the exception that it is missing the center trim.(see first pic) Today I was delivered a grille that I am being told is a 40 deluxe grill with center section and 2 outside panals.( middle pic) Issue is they are all 3 different. Can someone shed some light on what I really have here? Thanks
The first one is a 40 standard grill,,but it's missing the center section. The middle grill looks like a old Argentinean grill,,is it thin stamped sheet metal? i don't know what it is but it's definitely not for a 40 Ford,,DeLuxe or Standard. The last one you posted is a 40 DeLuxe. HRP
The 1st photo is of a 40 DeLuxe hood and grille installed on a 40 DeLuxe car.. The Standard hood won't work with a 40 Deluxe grille as the standard hood will fit only the Standard grille. The first two photos show a 40 DeLuxe with the 40 Deluxe grille and 40 deLuxe hood. The 3rd photo shows a 40 Standard with the 40 Standard Grille and 40 Standard hood. The center section of the Standard grille has been painted black. You can make a 40 DeLuxe look like a 40 Standard if you install a 40 Standard grille and a 40 Standard hood. You can make a 40 Standard look like a 40 DeLuxe if you install a 40 DeLuxe hood and a 40 grille. However, the 40 DeLuxe and 40 Standard hood locking mechanisms are different.
Get yourself a new Bob Drake catalog. Not only are they an excellent reference book, especially for '40 Fords, but you're going to need some more parts to make that all work whichever route you go, Std. or Deluxe. There's a whole bunch of braces and brackets that are essential to getting all of the hood, fenders, grille, etc. to line up right on a '40.
Tracer's first pic shows an old Argentina stamped steel repro '40 Standard grille (real Fords were diecast), his second pic shows another old Argentina repro of the bottom of a '38 grille, and his last pic shows a real live Henry Ford '40 Deluxe grille.
