I can top all of you! I went to the $$$$$ roadster show in pamona also and stumbled onto a 33 ford cab in primer with a new wood kit my marbles sucked up in my sack when he told me it was $8,000. and that was without delivering it that was another $100 It makes me want to move to Turlock!

  6. People who use the excuse of "it goes for that amount on Ebay" forget to realize the parts are over inflated because of the "needs" of the buyer and bidding wars. The high prices dont make the stand alone price for the parts...its the greed and (what people may call it) greed to get the part.

We have all done it, if there is a part on there, 1/2 the fun is beating out the other guy....then after said and done, we kick ourselves because of the price being 2x's the price you would have paid or actual value.

For myself and many others, the "build" aspect of the car building process is a spiritual experience consumed with every emotion possible. So, I guess it's a little upsetting to see people try to "pimp" the lifestyle we've all grown apart of. No matter what the culture consists of, there's always going to be the flash in the pan, fly by night characters just out to make the quick buck. As soon as those folks latch on to another activity that tickles their fancy, they'll do the same again...but what's new.

i think its funny because the guys that built that car if its the one i think it is from carson city nv are both hambers and true hot rodders...one being a very very good friend of mine.i think it is the car because of the pass quarter being gone...image is everything for a buyer and a seller... if some ones willing to pay...thats what its worth.and by the by if its who i think it is..they look at it like i do..its a lifestyle not a hobbie.

Well, I have heard this one for 40 years, and nothins changed. We all better hope it never changes, cause I still remember when you could get squat for anything with a big block in it. Don't seem to bother all these guys drivin a new 4 door pickup for $50,000.

Just me talkin, don't know nothin bout it.

What someone will pay, is what it is worth. It amazes me when I go to shows around this country how guys will jack up their prices, yet tell you yours isn't worth much. If he didn't take it home, it was worth the money OR "there is a sucker born every minute".

I'm sure that car was the one I seen at the Peppermill. It was rough but it had good fab work done on it.

I had went to the Auction and was drooling over the early Vettes and my wife said "buy one". I couldn't get my hand to raise at the prices they were getting.

My point is I saw Hard belly girls all week that I can't afford ,but I still enjoyed looking.

I saw a lot of cars I can't afford but I still like looking.

I see a lot of motorhomes that I can't afford but I still look.

Jealousy is a terrible state of mind, Don't get hung up on what someone else has or don't have.
Be happy with what you have, I talked to a guy In Reno in a wheelchair, car accident .
He would have been happy to trade me places. Go figure.
You won't have any more fun driving a $100,000 car than a $10,000 one.
    It's all in your mind.

Ray, I don't know you but I think you've just become one of my favorite Hambers. I'm ALWAYS interested in finding new peole who think 1 load is an idiot. I also would like to see pictures of ALL of the cars he BUILT to finance the delivery that was sacrificed to buy the Buick which is now on the block so he can join the RatRod crowd. Butt Reynolds and I have always had a good time at 1 loads expense. Come join the club. No dues, no meetings, just an occasional get together on the internet to celebrate his latest dumbass remark.

Hey, this isn't a hate post, unless your hating on cars priced high just because of it's year or builders name and not what it's really worth then take your bashing somewhere else. I started this thread because i was amazed at how expensive things are, and i know that each generation has said that and it's a habit thats going to repeat itself for for a long time to come. But im amazed at how people have come in and made things so expensive that with my limited experience, building even a second rate hot rod will take every last cent i have for the next few years.

I second that. You get a body, frame, and motor and you think your there. It is all the small stuff that adds up so quick. Like all the little trips to the parts house for bolts, nutes, hoses, bearings, etc

Last night I was kinda board, so I thought I'd read 1 low's threads to see if he's really as lame as you guys say he is. I usually try to give someone the benifit of the doubt. Sure enough, he removed all doubt. I stopped reading after the first 25/30 threads or so, cause i prefer to read USEFUL info, not post padding drivel, and e-pay links that trash cars that other guys have BUILT themselves.

I know I mention my thrashed low back to much, and I haven't contributed much tech, but I also haven't wasted tons of Ryans bandwidth with garbage either. I prefer to read and learn from my hot rodding forefathers(sp), and try to help out the "non-poser" newbies that need it.

It seems that every time I log in, I learn something new, and realize how much more I've yet to learn. There is one thing I do know though, and that's that this board is full of knowledgeable people who are willing to help (restectful) guys with technical info that isn't available in the quantity that we have here on the HAMB.

So, if you'll have me, I'd like to serve my apprenticeship in this club.

Oh yeah, 1 load, suck it!

  24. Some of the car prices weren't too bad back in the day, but we weren't earning a helluva lot of money either.

Here's a little fwiw for you.

    Circa 1963.
Engle billet cam, lifters, 1.8/1 rockers & pushrods = $105.

    Circa 2000.
Crower cam, PAW's Super Stock lifters, $110.

Not an exact comparison, but cam & lifter combo's have come way down in price.
Keep in mind we're comparing 1963 dollars to 2000 dollars.

Pretty much the same thing has gone on with other rodding and racing components.

Discretionary income has gone up considerably over what was available to a young married guy in the early 60's and that makes a difference.

It makes no difference what your main hobby is.
Hot rods, sailboats, golf or target shooting.
Any one of them is an expensive undertaking and you have to make choices somewhere along the line.

Best thing any hot rodder or wannabee hot rodder can do is to spend some of the car money on tools, learn some skills and do everything you can.

It's all about money, desire and blood, sweat & tears.

We'd all like to have a three window Deuce, but settling for a clean, good running 50 Chevy coupe, tossing on some cool wheel covers or hubcaps, a set of duals and learning all about the car before the serious modifications begin is a more than excellent way to go.

A 50 Chevy coupe may not sound like much, but I guarantee that just about any place you go - short of a rod run or the like - you'll be the only one there with a 50 Chevy....

Lets's just get a few things straight here... is this even the car in question here??
    http://www.theoriginalpoorboys.com/midnnightmass200579.jpg

The chicken wire thing threw me for a loop...???? chicken wire? are you kidding me? I still haven't found it... the car is obviously not a 31, its a 28, and that finish you see on most of the car is red oxide primer, a few desert-years old? sure, but its not surface rust. And as for the not even running thing- am i supposed to leave the car running the whole time we're at the show???? the car actually runs fairly well. and yes we drove it there and back. I told WHO that i sold the car for that much???? actually i'm not even sure it was me you talked to in the first place.

Anyway, first of all, this car was built in 10 days. From a bare body to a driver for a local show in 10 days. custom; chassis, seats, fuel tanks, rear suspension we made everything we could. So forgive us if we made a temporary floor (which for the record does not include chicken wire), just enough to mount the bomber seats we handmade, and cover the driveshaft. we have since been working on the car a lot, while hitting some hard to miss shows with our work in progress that incude, midnight mass which we drove the car to, did a rediculous burn-out for the contest after the show, and drove it home the next day. So its got some bare steel on the doors and decklid and firewall, thats the finish it comes with when you buy your doors and decklid and firewall in 4X8 sheets. WE MUST BE YUPPY RODDERS.

As for the price, i agree that 16 thousand dollars is a rediculous number for it in it's current state. If the car actually tickles somebody enough to pay that for it, than its their's, cant argue with that. otherwise the car will be finished and a complete floor made, and it will have paint on it, etc. And the price will still be the same...

About forty years ago, Don McLean summed all this up in his rather sad song about a white stallion -- "The More You Pay, The More It's Worth".
