It is not necessarily hotrodding, but old cars. I dated a girl in college in mid 90's whose parents moved to NC from PA. The first time we went down to visit, her dad had bought this 50 merc. I fell in love that day, corny but true. He ended up letting me drive it around the parking lot at a local supermarket while he went in. I can remember creeping over the speedbumps, because the megaphone tips would drag. I can't remember if it was a 327 or 318 car. He had a 50 ford shortly after that. She and I broke up. I talked to her dad when he moved back to PA. He said he sold the merc in NC after a couple years. I have seen it on the net and it was recently in show coverage in car culture deluxe or old school rods. It has had different caps over the years, but the car doesn't appear to have changed. Anybody here own it or know who has it now?

  3. Was into hot rods earlier in the local scene (Graeme Blaby's beige 34 tudor beater comes to mind)but, THIS one - Jerry Duncans 32 5W on the cover of the Dec 1988 issue of American Rodder really got me crankin on tradtional hotrods....STILL love that car.

'Influenced by' - - 1944' we moved from Chi'town to L.A. I was a mere lad, and somewhere around my area along Slauson Ave, saw many Hot Rods buzzzin around. Mad Man Muntz had a carlot nearby, up Figueroa, to the Coloseum, we rode our bikes to the first Hot Rod show, and saw some of the cars, went with Dad to the wood track motorcyle races at the Coloseum. Also to Gilmore Stadium, for the midgets, [ my uncles brother was 'King Karl' Young, one of the top drivers from 30,s to 40,s]. Then later on went to Bell Auto Parts, and the first Ford Obsolete. In L.A. used to see roadsters, coupes, customs, man it was cool. I look at some of the old pix and can recall the era. My 1930 Model A cpe was my first hot rod, [1955] which my Dad helped me paint

  9. My First Hot Rod 1956 001.jpg Her it is, my 33 chevy my Dad and I did, 33 chevy tu-door with 34,000 miles, mint interior (dyed it red) and came out nice, 50 Pontiac taillights, striped red and white canvas top and rear tire cover, 3-1 barrel carbs on a homemade manifold, dual exhaust, factory cable brakes that were scary, it had a sort of overdrive called free wheeling, red and white flame job painted in a dirt floor garage-we wet it down with sprinkler cans, front bumper was a chevy bumper over rider that fit the frame horns perfectly, needless to say I had a ball with it. But need for speed took me into a 38 Ford tu-door standard, it won my heart. Sold the 33, the kid totalled it at once, and it was scrapped. Thats my story and I'm stickin to it!! ~Sololobo~

I'm the little fellow in the red shirt. This photo was snapped sometime around 1960/61. That's my dad, a couple of his nephews on each side of him. Mike, my younger brother, is the little guy in the blue shirt. The car was purchased a completely original car. Dad and a couple of friends swapped in a '53 Merc flathead. The car has sold in the mid-60's. I was crushed.

It was a combination of old/uncompleted 1:24 scale cars. I have always been a car nut (the first word I spelled was CAR, not Mom or Dad.), but what got me into older cars were the model kit parts. My Dad is kinda handy with cars, but by need not for pleasure, but there was enough to catch the bug.

When I was 13 or so, I had a pieces of a 57 Chevy, a 56 F-100, and a Late model sprint car kits, as well as probably some other bits and pieces.

I made a balsa wood stake bed, put the small block and trans from the 57 in it, and then put the injection unit and stacks from the sprint car motor on the engine. I think the 57 must have had slicks, I dunno where else I would have gotten them, but it had it.

3 weeks after getting my first full time, non-intern job out of engineering school 12+ years ago, I bought a <badly> Pro-streeted 53 F-100.

After an 8 year diversion into 90's Chevy Caprice/Impala's, I am getting back into my F-100. Heading up to where it's stored later this week to go get it.

Old pic from '97, illustrating "responsible drinking"... hey I didn't drive it anywhere.

Around here there were very little in the way of Hot rods.I was about 9 years old and found a book on this car in the school library and it show you how it was built,Must of signed it out 3 or 4 times. After that any open engine car caught my eye.

  19. My Grandad's early 60's T Bird, the 63 Vette when it came out. The Mustang and American Graffiti when I saw it in '73. The Coupe really hooked me big time.
The 40 coupe was my first real hot rod. Hi po 289. I bought it in '76 I think.

Not so much hot rodding, but classic cars in general. There was an old 50's Mopar custom cruising around Riverside,CA called the AntiChrysler, and it was slick. The other one was the pic I saw of my grandfathers custom '51 Chevy. Red,dropped, with lake pipes.

Easy - I was born into this stuff - dad had a '40 deluxe coupe that we cruised in allot, and when the weather was nice he drove his green nailhead "T"bucket, and mom had a purple, Chevy powered "T"bucket. Oh, mom's other ride for summer? '63 jag XKE coupe with a Latham supercharger! I don't dare mention the constant rotation of F.E.D.s down at dad's shop, or the midgets, or the sprinters, or the drag boats,or......

  25. I can tell you the exact car and the exact moment....

ABC's Wide World of Sports did a broadcast from the NHRA Winternationals in 1966 and they put a camera crew with Shirley Shahan, the Drag-on-Lady. She and her Plymouth made it to the finals in Super Stock. I saw the broadcast and was hooked on drag racing every since. Here is a shot from the broadcast.

I don't know. I've always been into cars, mostly road racing, and not even vintage. Playing the original Gran Turismo for Playstation is how I got into it, always liked goin' to car shows as a kid. My dad's '58 Ranchero was definitely one of the first automotive memories. We used to ride in the back and he would drive around the yard.

    Good times.
