So I have a super insulated shop and it has never froze but we have had a brutal winter, nonstop cold weather. So back this spring I got my 32 sedan running after a nine year build. When we fired the motor we put straight water in it and of course I had some leaks to track down and fix so it wasnt to bad cleaning up without the sticky anti freeze. Well it just kicked me in the ass! I totaly forgot about it, I just ruined a vintage asskickin 68 327 with only 4000 miles on the rebuild!!!! If any of you good HAMBers want to each donate a dollar I might be able to get a new mill! Ha Ha! What a dumb Shit I am!!!! IMG_1686.JPG IMG_1692.JPG

  6. That's a bad one. I've stitched lots of blocks. But never one that bad.
    Sucks.

  7. My sympathy on that one... have went through more or less the same thing but the cracks were in the lifter valley sides. Never leaked until years later after disassembly and hot tanking the block. Found a lot of strange parts combinations in that engine.

  8. Damn. Homeowners Insurance ? It is a condition of home ..... just depends on you, and coverage. My OT boat had a massive sheet of ice, slide down the roof and kerplowie my cover, navagation, and steering controls. Made a 3700 dollar repair ALOT more affordable.

BTW that sucks. Love that build. Good luck with everything. You'll rise again.

Bummer, a sweet little 327 bites the dust, damn. Maybe a good hearted local HAMBER will donate a block.....

I think if I only had 4000 miles on a well built 327. I would go out and find another block to machine.

I'm with Capt Chap on this - find another block and get it machined.

  16. Better off with a crate 350 in the overall long run. It will treat you well for many miles down the turnpike.

  17. Hard for me to admit, but you are not alone.......years ago I did the exact same thing with a fresh flathead V8. Still pissed at myself over that one

Don't feel bad ,I threw 350 engine gear on a fresh 400 build and that didn't end well either.

Argggh. If that happened to me I'd be too pissed to post! I feel for you. That's going to be a time consuming, and expensive lesson.

A solid 327 block shouldn't be that hard to find.

I've seen a number of engines that froze and were cracked just like his, plus one big block Mopar that cracked on the inside and the water pushed the oil out the top when we took the car in the school shop and left it in the heated shop over the weekend. I have never seen a core plug pushed out by freezing water in the 55 years I have been working on engines. Not saying it doesn't happen but they weren't put there to keep the block from cracking they were put there because the holes were where the mold held together and where the got the sand out after casting.

That really sucks. I like the fresh crate motor idea.
That's the reason why I only use a 50-50 antifreeze mix, never straight water.

By the way freeze plugs are a misnomer.
They are not really freeze plugs although they will sometimes save a frozen block.
    They are actually core plugs.
