THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS if you strip to bare metal, and just put primer and no sealer or paint...might as well add wet sanding stripped cars to the pile'''

I agree 100 % but I'd rather find one like that than in bare metal.

I can vouch for that, primer only will be see through in no time when exposed to the elements

They don't get any better if you let them sit outside either.

That is not frigging patina either.

  18. Why I always sand to bare metal any car I paint where the customer says "already in primer ready for paint". Who knows how long it's been in primer. Even if kept inside humidity can still get it. Plus not all paint is compatible with all primer. Also by sanding bare you find any shoddy bodywork they did that they'll try to blame on you when it comes apart

Blasted and primed going to paint. No bondo, very few pin holes, almost zero rust IMG_6972.jpeg IMG_6973.jpeg 74553446996__B9937159-AE2E-447E-A9FF-7770D9A865FC.jpeg

what primer is that??? I wouldn't paint over it un less I primed it ,.. in fact, I wouldn't paint the car even if I did prime it..... most the time people use surface primer and not DTM.... biggest problem I've seen is not only pro painters and home painters is they try to be chemists...if it says don't do it on the can... theres always those who say I did it and nothing happened...

the best thing to put on a bare metal car that you have no intentions of painting for a while or even 10 yrs or more down the road... and wanna protect the metal is BEHR exterior paint/ primer...you can pick the shine , egg, simi gloss, flat... and you can roll it on.. or spray it with a harbor freight HVLP if you drill the tip... and also get it tinted any color you want... and water clean up...

the second part wasn't to you, you no doubt have a good painter picked out... more what I was say'n was to the DIY 'rs.... people dive in to stuff like stripping a car that they don't have the money to get it painted but wanna do something... so they buy sand paper and spray bomb primer...

  25. Last pic is another Topolino that someone stripped and did nothing to the bare metal. It is not the same body in the first two pics.

I think the key is to not let them sit outside for eternity in primer, especially if you're prone to nasty weather for part of the year. this is the result of DuPont 80S Red Oxide after never having seen the inside of a garage for +/_ 40 years, including being snow covered yearly. Bonus points for POR-15 on the roof.

    Hello,

When we found our 1940 Willys Coupe sitting under a canvas tarp in the backyard of one of our older neighbors, we were surprised at the condition it was in. We did not know how long it had been sitting there in that huge back yard. our neighborhood on the Westside was divided into every 4 houses had similar main house models. The difference being a one car garage or a two car garage.

Where this Willys Coupe was hidden was on our way to the junior high school walking street, where we picked up other friends along the way. the color of the Willys Coupe was faded black that looked like black primer.

Until I find the missing films of our 40 Willys Coupe I took during our build, these last ones will suffice. The day was filled with black and white images, so the red primer we sprayed looked like a flat black primer in most photos. The body was in excellent shape and since we do not like sanding and shaping, there was the simple fine sand, then a couple of coats of red primer paint.

Yes, we both had our future colors picked out, but my brother told me that since we will be doing some tear out, modifying and installing various parts and equipment, it has to stay a primer, so we don’t have to tippy toe around the build hours.

Just to make sure I was not thinking to far back in the memory department, I asked the owner of the 34 5 window Ford coupe with the Oldsmobile motor in it what he remembered. He said that he and my brother went to the Standard Brands Paint Company on Long Beach Blvd and bought red primer for my brother and black primer for him. So, the two builds would stand out by themselves.

We had dropped a plastic tarp on the concete pad, spread out more plastic tarps all around on our mom’s laundry steel poles for a tight roof and support. Then once the coverage was all around, we wheeled the faded black Willys Coupe inside the makeshift plastic tent. We used a large canvas cover overhead for all other shade projects.

We had plans to get some additional speed parts to make our 671 SBC motor have more horsepower and then already had a local paint shop ready for our final appearance spray paint. (late August 1960) We also had some wider M&H slicks and a two hole Hilborn Injection System on order.
upload_2024-10-13_3-29-13.png Then the involvement stopped in August 1960.
The proposed plan for September 1960

    Note:

Years later, with the memory only in my head, I was wandering around a set up day at the new Lion’s Dragstrip Museum and saw a red painted 1941 (different grill) Willys Coupe sitting there on display. Red primer black wheels and a tow bar that looked exactly as our did, due to the attachment position of the bracket. Behind the red primer Willys Coupe on display was a 671 sitting on an old SBC motor.
