Look on the bright side, at least there is a good frame to weld to. It could be a lot worse. I would say you are lucky in more ways than one. ;)

    ding ding!

easiest way is on the alignment machine. if the thrust is out, or you can get the front end to swing in caster/camber/toe, then you need to hack and whack.

    I wouldn't bet on that -- I don't think a 110v welder could make a mess that big:rolleyes:

Seriously -- what was he doing wrong (okay, maybe it should be what WASN'T he doing wrong) too much heat for the stick size?

I've welded enough to know that isn't good, but I'm wondering what was wrong.

Well we know one thing, the guy can't weld worth a damn....the up side is you should only have a few hours grinding and welding. Provided the suspension is some where near where it's supposed to be.

In your honest opinion, does that snotty weld make the car not worth what you paid for it?
    Or.....
For a minor amount of work will you have a car worth a lot more than you paid for it?
    Or...
Is the value not important as long as it's what you want, and you're happy?

    Pick one..

Man that is a shame, well the good thing is you seen it before you hit the streets. I have seen some shady stuff when it comes to welding. It could of really been ugly for ya. ATLEAST it can be fixed easy enough. Good luck...:)

Ah yes bird shit welds how well I remember those days using a borrowed Sears 90 amp AC buzz box life was good indeed. Just grind them out and go to it again it will be corrected in no time.

Now THAT is a good attitude to have. Most people want to blame anybody BUT themselves nowadays. Bet the fix will be easier with an attitude like that.

If my penetration was that poor I'd never have had children.

  21. this just goes to show you that buying a used hotrod is not the way to go. No matter who built it, there will always be something wrong, somewhere. there should be some kind of law set in place that the original builder is required to keep the car he has built forever. That would eliminate what we see here, and what has been spoken about in other such threads. This car could have caused an accident while being hauled on a flatbed. If it was secured by the front end, those welds could have came loose over a severe bump and the car could have jumped off and dropped into traffic causing a massive traffic jamb, resulting in many injuries and the wreckage of millions of dollars of automobiles traveling our nations highways.
the solution to this problem is simple. No selling of any used hotrod ever. When the original builder tires of it, he should be required to dismantel the car completely and sell off the parts he won't be needing for his next build.

I bought my car sight unseen from a guy in NY. he had a lot of detailed pics..but that was all I went on. I got real lucky!! but I knew the car was just a starting point... I wouldn't say I would do it again though. the time i waited for it to show up was pretty stressful, lol

I dunno if it's been said before, but I wouldn't recommend welding strut rod brackets onto the frame. Rather, fabricate brackets that bolt to the frame. The constant tension/compression action could crack the welds/tear the brackets off the frame. Just my worthless $0.02.

There are two things in life where penetration is of the utmost importance... and welding is the other one.

I'm of the opinion that welding is exactly like sex: get in a comfortable position, take your time, and get good penetration for pleasing results.
And you'll be waaaay ahead of the game if you have someone with some experience teach you how to do it, rather than believing self-taught is good enough.
