I agree-Darwinism in full effect-the more cars they demolish, the more mine will be worth. Nobody wanted wagons and people beat the hell out of those-guess what everyone wants now?;)

I about lost my breakfast reading this article.

That Edsel did have some really straight parts on it.

I say we deluge that pompous ass with phone calls and write the cat who wrote the article.

Also, we should forward this article to Hot Rod Magazine, Custom Rodder(attention Rob), Street Rodder, Car Craft, etc....

Here is a copy of the letter I sent to the writer:

    Dear Sir,
All I can say is that I am really appalled by this article.

A Demolition Derby featuring old cars??

    WHY?

Now I know you are just the messenger here so I am not going to lauch a tirade on you, but for what are these guys thinking? I own a '59 Edsel. It is a really great car an it draws a crowd and smiles when I take it out. The Checker Cab pictured with your text is a desireably piece as well.

With all of the nation roaming the hills and prairies looking for scrap iron (which is then sent over to China and resold to us) and the EPA coming down on wreking yards that have existed forever and a day(instead of attacking the big businesses who are let off and PAID for polluting), finding parts for older cars is getting pretty damned difficult.

I hope that you receive a ton of letters in defense of the old cars and condemn this attrocity.

Maybe next time, these folks can trash some Hondas and Toyotas instead.

    Sincerely,
    Mark Karol-Chik

    What a waste......

And another "Mighty Edsel" bites the dust. It looks like the one that Cindy Williams drove in American Graffiti. Too bad. :(

I'm with Ray on this one. I would love to watch this derby! There is not a car there that I would waste my time with and they are not my cars, so what do I give a rats ass what they do with THEIR cars? I hope Tuck goes and post some pictures!

  6. You guys that are mad about this need to get together, pick up a '63-'66 Imperial convertible, gut it, weld a top from a coupe on it, put a late 318 with all the demo tricks, and go whoop these guys into piles of rust and take their prize money for yourself.

Which, incedentally, I have seen guys do. An Imperial is tough enough; then add that X-member. I've heard of guys who don't even bother with a top, too, just put a 4-point cage in it - all depends on the rules where you run. The car is pretty well indestructible and depending on the competition might be able to run three or four derbies and win a couple of them. I've seen guys run Imperials through enough derbies, one time one that looked to have about a dozen on it gave up and split the frame ahead of the rear wheels. Even then it still ran, it just couldn't move.

Personally, I kind of like '61-'63 Imperials. I owned one once. Don't know what happened to it. But no one really cares about them outside of nice convertibles and coupes. So they end up in the derbies - one of these days a straight Imperial will be scarce as hell.

As for the cars that get offered up, checkout demogear.com - I have seen more nice cars listed there that I won't even look. Everything from late 50's DeSoto wagons, to a '69 Gran Prix - a year older than my first car - that had been driven to this place in PA from Florida, it was that good of shape - being offered for demo. The same guys later had a solid '64 Chrysler wagon, just like one that was in the magazines last month. No motor or hood but that stuff is easy to find, good solid body on it. Who knows where these cars go when they sell 'em -

Ya'know...it is a pretty fuckin stupid thing to do. There's lots of edsel people out there that would give up groceries for the grille alone. I woudn't, but that's just 1 car. We can only imagine what else these lame inbreeders will destroy that day.

Yeah...anyone who's participating that may read this, I called you inbreeders. I hope antifreeze gets in yer fuckin eyes. Wait a minute...y'all prolly drink the sheeit...

BTW ray...I didn't see your point of view before I posted. You are entitled to it as much as I am mine. I do see your point clearly, but being a restorer for over 25yrs, I can't see any rationale to this event other than useless consumption of classic car resources.

and I still think they're a buncha dumbass inbreeders.

Last year my boss demo'd a very nice mid 60s Chrysler 4 door. It was a beautiful rust free car. The car cover for it was in the back seat. People were up in arms about it; I watched people walk away from the car muttering and shaking their heads. The thing is, THE CAR WAS FOR SALE FOR 3 YEARS, AND PEOPLE LAUGHED AT THE OWNER FOR ASKING $1000 FOR IT! No one wanted a mid 60s 4 dr Chrysler. The owner gave it to my boss, on the condition my boss would pull the 440/auto and drop it off at his house.
Four door Edsels? Come on. Would you have locked up the brakes, and gone after a beat 4 door Edsel laying in a grove? This is probably the nicest that car has looked in a couple of decades. If it hadn't been demo'd, it probably would have gotten hauled in in the next scrap price increase.

I see everyone's point. But are you angrier at the kid who worked on an old car and made it look good(if only to last a couple minutes) or are you pissed off at the dipshit promoter's statement.

Now, to address the idea that inbreeding runs rampant in mid America, why is this different than stock car racing? I bracket race a 87 Regal with a 455 Buick. Ever try to find good body panels ANYWHRE in the US that haven't been used for hobby stock cars? To me, a 84 Hurst/Olds or 87 Monte SS is a hell of a lot better looking car than an Edsel( And a lot more valuable..price one if you don't believe me!)

I apologise for the rant, but leave the kid alone, leave the newspaper alone, and quick go buy every abandoned 4 door Edsel you can get your hands on!

C'mon down the the Burque man. We got lots of old regals layin' around. You might have to scrape the candy paint off from when it was a lowrider, but they are fairly common here. The only problem is that all the youngsters want to make 'em lowriders, so they can get pretty pricey.

My money is on the checker. It has heavy bumpers a well engineered frame and good control arms and stearing. How many of those buicks you want. I ebayed one {very nice complete car bad engine} 3 times before it sold for 175.Think what the original stock as it came from the factory folks said when Boyd took that very nice orignal T and made a rod out of it. As I have said its mine I paid for it and I can do what I want to with it. This has been a fun thread....Bobby...

What a shame, a waste of perfectly good 60's era cars, and all far a prize of about a grand.
