Given the relative masses of the vehicles involved and what that car went through after the impact, I'd say it did very well. Better than most vehicles of its vintage, stock or rodded, would have. Probably helps that it got punted squarely across the rear structure, and not in a corner, and not in the front.

well they did paint it "Ram me red"according to insurance statistics.I never had so many near misses as when I drove the T bucket for 2 months daily I think people get so involved in "Checking out the car "that they forget to check out the brake lights etc. And tunnel vision right at you or into another car. I also find that they are so used to todays huge form fit ultra bright lights they don't even see our "traditional" tail lights I had model A tail lights on the T and was told 4 different times by people at stop lights that "You have no brake lights"In each case it was broad day light and they were working fine!

  6. Amazing that the doors still close. Bear claws??

Blue dot tail lights might have been had to see if it was still daylight when it happened.

When it got bunted down the road in went into a center median gulley, I think the front bumper got caught in the turf and flipped it on the roof. By the way it also had Bear Claws latches somewhat better than the old A Bones latches along with the seat belts kept the passengers somewhat safe. I am still trying to find out what is going to happen to the remains.

Sorry to see this and glad everyone is OK.

What sort of tail lights did that car have on it? Too often, I see rodders put those tiny little "flush" LED lights on their rods, or mount them way down low. That's inviting trouble, imo. Not saying thats what caused THIS accident, just saying, people should should be smart about brake lights. Why try to "hide" them?

Sorry to see those pics. Glad the couple are ok.

I too wonder about the tail lights. Looks like it had stock Model A lights on it. Wonder if they were LED's or not? Blue dots would have made them worse. Not faulting the owner, just saying it might have contributed...

The fact is that modern drivers have gotten used to large red tail lights and CMSL (Center High Mount Stoplamps) on vehicles. I still have a set of 1157 bulbs in the 55 and am thinking it is time to go LED before something happens...

Similar rear end accident happened to a friend of mine in San Jose....he had just finished a bitchin' '55 Chev pick-up (bright red). On it's maiden voyage, he got plowed into while stopped at a light. The lady said she didn't see his brake lights (uhhhh, dead stop?) the police officer rolled his eyes and ask: "you didn't see his brake lights....well why not that big red object in front of you?"

Well, I guess out of bad stuff like this unforntuate situation always comes something to take home and use in your next build or re-build.

I figure seat belts, bear claw latches, LED rear lights and possibly a method of reducing gas leakage in a roll over situation would help.
No point having one without the others...

  16. Glad all were OK. Makes me wonder what would happen in a similar situation with the rear mounted gas tank on my 32. I didn't see one on his so guess it was inside or saddles.

I'm glad they are OK. This why I don't cut A and B pillers in the middle when I chop atop, I cut from the top of the pillers down, keeps the body strength solid in case of just this type of problem, think about it!

OUCH that sucks! Thank god they survived. Bad enough getting hit like that then to top it off flipping the car.I agree with others on here (not saying the case with this car ) but GOOD tail lights and a bright 3 rd brake light (not behind a dark tinted window) can help prevent a horrible accident like this from happening. Last Sat A friend of mine in his Model A coupe got slammed in the rear while sitting at a red light by a Harley, heard the guy on bike was drunk (7 AM ) no insurance or drivers license. We in the body shops are seeing a lot more rear enders since everybody is driving talking on cel phones and sending text messages these days not paying attention. I like the bumper sticker (hang up the phone and drive).

Glad the folks got out of this accident with minimal damage. Hopefully the car can but fixed to at least its previous condition.

Can I ask where in Canada this happened? Just curious to know.

according to scientist it takes more of an impact to crack/break fiberglass than it does to dent steel! A minor impact that would leave a dent in a steel body won't show in a glass panel, Even window glass is stronger than steel. Why we get the perception that glass is weak is because once glass is pushed past it's failure point the result is so dramatic in appearance. shattered panels rather than visual dents/crumples Corning glass used to have a film showing strenght tests on plate glass compared to sheet metal and a structural beam and glass beam it showed how glass would take pressure and impact that would permanently distort steel and return to normal after the fact but it would take more pressure or impact before the glass would distort in the first place.I don't remember the actual values but for sake of example if it took 8 LBs of force to bend the steel any amount it took 12 to bend the glass any amount. The real test were run side by side so you could see exactly what was happening to both.

I was at a little season final car show to- day and heard the Insurance company wrote the Model A, off for the insured value then sold it back to the owner for $6.K and he is going to fix it. I hope that was a wise decision on his part????

I don't think the tail lights had any thing to do with it, the DIPSHIT driving the truck was not paying attention, probably texting or anything but looking,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The car is repairable,if it was mine I would fix it. The car already proved it is tough getting hit by a BIG truck with no injuries.Sounds like the owner doesn't let bad luck get him down. I say go man go!

those traditional taillights are small, I have been stopped for no brake lights with 39 ford and early chevy taillights, I had them but the police couldn't see them. You guys with the low roadsters/ coupes/sedans should take note. Being cool ain't worth dying over.
