  2. the reason the 57 don't lookto good stock to some people is the fact the federal government was slow in deciding to allow quads and ford in their infinite wisdom was planning on quads. hence the odd single lamp. notice the 58 is an improvment

If it was wearing coke bottle gl***es before, taking them off in favor off a severe overbite is not an improvement! I like '57 Ford just fine the way they are...

more, like breasts all different shapes and sizes happen. you guys should be open to new ideas than sticking to the 10 same cl***ic custom cars or hotrods that everyone tries to copy. for example how many abortion "bobber trucks" are there now?

Only the tail lights were better for '57 - the headlights, grille, side trim - and the hood! - were all better looking for '58.

    One guy's opinion.

  15. From what I can tell, about 75% of the guys on this board don't like real, traditional late '50s-early '60s custom cars with a lot of things changed. If you do more than change/remove the side trim, handles, a grille swap, and maybe chop it, you've done too much and now it's ugly.

Meanwhile everyone loves all those goofy looking Ed Roth cars. I don't get that. The only difference I see is his cars almost all could have (note could have, I am fully aware most were fibergl*** one-offs) been based on early Ford roadsters, instead of 50s-60s full sized stuff. A lot of the styling trends aren't much different than stuff on the radical full size cars of the time.

As for me, once in a while a custom did turn out ugly and goofy, but for every one I find in an old magazine that looks like ****, there's half a dozen that look good.

What's funny is with the headlights down in the grille this Ford starts to remind me of a 60's pickup truck. If the hood came out with two big scoops, one on each side, it would be a '60 Chevy pickup's short fat cousin.

By the way, doesn't that blue '58 have '58 Chrysler headlight doors on it? Or do they just look similar.

The '58 is nice, too...the tail lights are blocky, and not real ***y, but...geeezz, look at the thigs Chrysler was putting out in the fifties! And they have grown on me, too...sorta...
I admit, I DO NOT like most customs that have an enormous amount of work/extensive modifications...not because of a lack of appreciation for creativity. Because more often than not, an imrovement HAS NOT been made over the car in its original form. This is the whole reason for modifying something, and it is seldom the case with a radical custom...only a few in many, many attempts get the whole look, the flow, everything right. If you tear down an engine, spend countless hours and money to rebuild it, and it runs worse, and looks worse, it was a waste! problem is, that kind of deficiency is easy to measure! looks are just a matter of taste...harder to judge, but, Few people have the vision, and skill, to truly re-direct a whole car, again, RADICALLY, and come out with a better design than was already there.
I don't really love most of Roth's cars, either...and I think that '49-51 Merc's rarely come out worse, when customized because, honestly, imo, they are pretty damn unattractive outta the box...its easy to improve!

by the way: the second to last photo, of Bob Jean's '57, with the slender Desoto grill...THAT one, looks fabulous! the rest...well...its in the eye of the beholder, I guess!

I wonder if this is a bolt on? Actually I kinda think the 58s are ok, but the 59s are difinitely chugly.
I think the 60s are the bomb, my favorite Ford design.

The 58 front clip should bolt on the 57, the taillight and rear deck are all different.
That blue one has chrysler quads, I have that same setup on mine. But with out the 58 grille/bumper combo.

Yep..it was a pretty fairly comment trick in the late 50's and early 60's
I agree with Nads on the *** of a 58......the designers were smoking crack or Ol Henry came back from the grave and ****ed it.

Still.....the 58 is the most underated 50's car....I love watching Psycho and the 57 and 58 fords.

I'm digging the grille treatment on the bottom right car. Whats that from originally? It would look pretty sweet with the "pointed" eyebrows of the first pic with F-100 trim rings.
