Hi Folks, I've got a Thickstun (two-piece teardrop -for use on top of two 94's- with inlet holes/slots on the underside) and wonder if there's already a foam filter element for it somewhere out there? I thought about purchasing the green unifilter 60ppi foam in bulk (maybe a few(?) layers of 5/8" thick each?) and making my own element, but wonder if you all have any better ideas or suggestions? :confused:Thanks

Me getting zero replies to this post tells me I won't be using the cool-looking thickstun element... it makes more sense to use the helmets that were in in 49. I promise I won't get into an argument with myself. Happy new year. Oh no, I insist.

For my Hexagon Tool two piece I used a round filter from a later model and cut it and made a teardrop shape and it works well. I could take a photo of it but have never put a photo on this forum but could send it to you on your address.

Thanks 27T and JYkid...good ideas. I might do as 27T said, if I end-up using anything, or maybe just get some uni 60 foam in bulk and zip tie it to the inside base . I'll measure up from the bottom to find the height and form one to fit if I need to.

I put a couple of the little wire mesh covers on each carb and then cut a piece of the green foam to make a filter that fits inside the tear drop. I have not got to the point of final tuning but my two 81's may be running rich because of it.

That's probably better idea 36T, thanks. Maybe I'll somewhat permanantly affix the mesh on top side of inlets underside of the element, then do the seperate foam on top of each carb. I heard those type elements could be too restrictive (there's a thread here somewhere about that), so probably need to experiment.... thanks for the pic too.

I've been running a thickstun for years now and initially I didn't run anything. I then tried those small round air filter that are meant to sit directly on top of each carb, near choked the car to death, took them off and the car was back to normal.

In the end I settled on some very open wire mesh and then two layers of very open foam as well. I still wonder if my carbs run a bit rich because of air flow problems but all in all its been operating in that fashion for probably 5 or 6 years now with no issues that I know of.

Biggest problem is getting enough air through I think.

I have messed around with my filter, still fine tuning it but it is getting better.
I found there was not enough air getting through, so initially opened it up to the level of the little tabs you can see in pic. Still felt it was too restrictive hence I raised the lid a bit more. I have a wide mesh round the perimeter and on the inside with a layer of open foam (used on bus air filters) sandwiched between.
As I say a work in progress.

i have used the bulk green foam in mine for years lightly oiled and clean it regularly with no issues seems to flow fine.... i placed a co**** (not a fine) ss wire screen in bottom section than the foam on top....

I was looking for the same filter for my Thickstun and was told Retro Rod Inc (www.retrorodinc.com) has them. I haven't called them yet to ask about the filter, but they may have one...
