Those of you who live in NASTY weather states.. Classic as "Daily"???

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 73super, Sep 10, 2010.

  1. I attribute salt or whatever they use on my NY roads for finishing off the floors on my '65 Belair and '68 Impala.

  3. I would drive mine year round ( Wisconsin ) if it were'nt for the snow.... and the ice.... and the cold.... and the salt.... and oh yeah the fact that the only part I enjoy about winter is the fact that we have 2 fireplaces and a shitload of firewood. In Wisconsin we work on them in winter and drive em April thru October.

I don't think I'm qualified to comment here, except to say our salt is all around us, in the water. Adverse weather? You mean below 65 degrees? :D

  5. hey 4x4's are classics too lol.. not only can you drive them in the winter, you can play in the snow with them too...

... Insert jealously and envy here please. Ahhh Hawaii. It really is true. When you go you don't want to come back. Now you've got me day dreaming. Remember sitting with my toes in the water, feeling that light breeze come off the ocean, good strong cup of coffee, 'bout 5:00 a.m. in the morning with nobody else around... sniffle, sniffle.

If I lived over there I'd be driving a 50's woody year round! :D

Lets get realistic. My truck came from a junk yard. I put the cab (with rusted out floors) on the 4x4 frame and made the front fenders, box sides, and patched up rotted rear fenders. I even mounted a snow plow on the 4x4 frame. It is my daily driver, all 8-10 mpg worth, year around. It has been my driver for almost 10 years now and yes, I have to patch up the body sometimes. There is nothing I can't redo on this truck. The heater is good, once the truck reaches operating temp, as long as I'm not driving on the highway. Its drafty, and the defroster sucks (those rubber squeegees are life savers), but it gets me where ever I want to go when ever I want to go. Gene

Not a classic, But..There is a nut 2 miles from me that drives a `57 Corvette year round. White walls/full caps in the summer- Snow tires/dog dishes in the winter. Honest.

Re; the title topic; Classic? Any favorite car should be driven, classic or not.

I live where I want to live. Weather, driving conditions, is a component of that choice. Todays season is my fav time of year, but only because I can compare it to winter, spring, & summer. The moderate temperatures and weather of autumn, however, would be a bore if it were to be perpetual. Change, when weather conditions apply, is an attractive consequence.

    In a more philosophical way of thinking;
Why in hell would I choose to live somewere I didn't want to be. DOH? :D

First off, in 1950, '50 Fords, Chevies, and Oldsmobiles were new cars, and they made more every day, and old cars were old cars. You could probably buy a 32 Ford that ran for $50, so it really wasn't a big deal if you destroyed it---the answer to that was to buy another one for another fifty bucks. Second, at least in the part of NY where I grew up, in the '60s and '70s, the winter roads were plowed and sanded, but didn't get the mass quantities of salt and calcium chloride dumped on them that they do today--people just had to be big boys and girls and learn how to drive on a hard packed layer of snow/ice until spring melted it away. Third, even with the more favorable road conditions back then (salt-wise, anyway), cars still went to hell quickly. '60 Plymouths had the headlights falling out of their rotten front fenders by '65-'66. The answer? Buy a newer car.

Oh if only it were just sprinkles occasionally. I live in the cascade foothills and we get bad weather. Anything that comes off the cascades easterly dumps in our backyard.

I AM referring to those (like us) who get 4 seasons.. not just mainly dry year round.

Tho' I live in Washington now, I grew up in Northern Idaho.. so I know snow, mud, and ice.

Same here in Oregon - we get twice the rain as Portland ( average 74 inches a year plus another 20 or so inches of snow). Have used 62 nova as daily many years but working on my 46 stude p/u for daily use and have a 82 crew cab chevy 1ton diesel dually for hauling and farm use that I will use during snow storms. Only have to drive 3 miles to work:D

Yea i guess your right about the salt, i've never lived in the 'rust belt' but, nontheless, if an old car is your daily already i dont see how a little snow makes a difference, just throw some sand bags in the back and go for it. After all there's plenty of tin out there to fix it if it gets f'ed ip, and they are making more every day.

Btw i guess i did sound like a smart ass, sorry

  18. The problem with the old cars is #1 they didn't have near the rust protection in the first place that newer cars would get, and #2 with the fins and coves and so on they just have that many more places for salt/ice/water to collect and sit and rot. I discovered a peculiarity to one car - if it had a single exhaust, eventually the frame rail on the other side would rot, because in the winter they'd get a big frozen ball of salty crap stuck there that the heat of the pipe would melt away on the other side of the car.

At least the guy with the Corvette, if he keeps his frame and stuff well protected, that's not going to rot out.

But I got into a couple of NY yards in places where they must have used less salt, and while I did pull a couple out like that '64 Gran Prix that had already had the quarters patched and looked like it might have been parked by '71 (judging by gas reciepts in the glove box), a lot of others did not have rot in the usual spots, or only rotted bad where they were touching the dirt/grass/weeds. So it's the road salt that's the biggest issue - if they don't use it, and you undercoat and go over the car to keep water from collecting anywhere, you can probably drive most anything year round.
