So I have my engine all cleaned and ready for paint and some dress-up bits. I have a pint of POR-15 Ford blue (some some call it corporate blue), but this thread in the main forum has me seriously considering painting it gold. Would this be sacrilege? I think the gold would look pretty darn nice with my chrome water pump, alternator, and oil pan, my stainless bolts, my off-white caddy air cleaner, and my finned aluminum Edelbrock cl***ic valve covers.
Would this be sacrilege? Not in my book. Besides, it's your car. Do it your way and with your ideas. Now, if you start talking SBC, that's a whole nuther story...................
Gold looks kind of gaudy,I vote for the Ford blue.Blue reflects against chrome and makes it look more glossy, and it matches the cars color theme from your album pictures.
I'm for more paint & less bling in the engine area but not partial to any particular color. I went with the goldish/greenish tint color in my '56 because is was close to the original color of the '55 Mercury Yblock I'm using. But red, green, corporate blue... I like any of them. Not real fond of that pukey yellow color some Mercs had though...
OK I have a 302 I am installing in my 55 and it's Ford Blue . I like the gold on the Merc engine but not a modern Ford engine ! Sorry but just my thoughts . I guess you just go with what ever you like since it's your car in the end . I am just a little traditional when it comes to my Ford ! Jim
I went gold, because it would have been a popular engine colour for the era. Gold aluminum and chrome. If I do it again, I'll probably go white, but it won't be my daily anymore.
Gold was the stock factory color for a 56 Merc. My engine is gold ceramic rattle can paint from O' Rielleys. My rocker covers are a copy of the ones in Sweetdreams avitar. Now that Mercury is no longer sold, those old rusty M E R C U R Y covers will look cool in red on white. I hope Sweetdreams is not offended.
Don, no problem. I did those covers that way for Raceron when I did his motor per his preference. I like the look myself. We didn't want to lose the Mercury heritage of his '55 core motor. - STreetdreams
Here's Before and After photos of the engine. The new color isn't exact but it's as close to greenish-gold as we could find, and actually looks more greenish in person. The before pic is as the motor was removed from a wrecked '55 Mercury that sat in a barn for many years prior.
Well, I finally decided on blue for a couple reasons. First of all I already have it, so it saves me another $30 for another pint. And I think I'd be happier with it over the long run with the plans I have for this car. Plus, I saw a buddy of mine's bike that he painted the engine gold on using the same POR-15 that I want to use, and it didn't really have the same pop that I was expecting.
I was gonna say earlier - no diff on the color, as it's only 'skin deep'. Inside is what really counts. . .
Thanks, Don. Coming from someone who races on the salt, as the builder I consider that quite a compliment. I'm sure Ron feels the same way as the owner, manager and Chief Financial Officer of the project.
Wow, do I get a raise??? Such a ***le wouldn't fit on a business card.... Maybe I'll just replace that ***le in a year or so with "RETIRED" Thanks for the compliments Don.
