62 327, rebuilt 8 years ago, and has been running. I pulled the manifold and found the heat riser crossover full of oil, fortunately it was blocked off. It seems to not be sealing at the bottom of the intake manifold but the ports seem fine. Should I get thicker head gasket or intake gasket to raise things up. I do not want to mill any of my vintage intakes, and would prefer not to replace good heads. Any thoughts? It runs fine, as it has for 8 year's.
A friend of mine was working on a 57 chev restoration with the original 283 and ran into the same problem He had Cometic gasket make him some head gaskets They can make them to your specific thickness
Reseal it with new gaskets and forget it . It worked great as you say for 8 years,,,,,go for 10 this time around . Tommy
Can you change the port shape on the intake with JB Weld to cover the gasket area so it will seal? Then you can always remove the JB to make the manifold stock again if you ever need to.
Felpro makes a head gasket shim that can be used to compensate for excessive machining. Shim is .020 thick, Part # 7733SP. I used a set (different part number of course) to help with the same sort of issue on a 390 Ford. Still running well over 20 years later.
Cometic offered .027-.140” head gaskets. I used a set of .080” to lower compression. Ran on the dyno without any problems.
