I replaced the 2 piece driveshaft in a '64 Impala one time , kept tearing the carrier bearing out , so I took it all out , measured the distance between the tranny and the rearend , went to the local junkyard , and bought a one piece drive shaft and jacked the car up by its bumper , so as to let the rear end drop low enough to slide the driveshaft in over the rear , took a torch and whittled a little out of the bottom of the "x" section of those Impala frames so as to not have the drivesahaft drag on the frame........never had the carrier bearing problem again.... and I beat the shit out of that car with a healthy 327 and a t-10 4 sp..:D

  2. Thanks guys, a few more things to ponder.

  3. I have a billet/urethane carrier I got off E-Bay that went bad on my first trip. the bearing is loose in the urethane, causes a vibration around 70mph. I replaced it with a stock one and the process below.

you beat me to it, Rashy taught me that trick, I filled it with some Roof sealant I had, sitffened it up quite a bit. Combined with the slip joint my 59 is very happy.
I also had a stock carrier come apart at the spot welds, HRCC welded it up since I was in an appt at the time.

If you're driving it "down", it's hard on the carrier. Found that out with the slammed '62 Impala we had.

if you want one piece you have too go to a larger diamenter cause of the length (((around chevelle length)) ,,if its an x frame you have to cut the back of the x out some,,the ones i build for 58 to 64 gm,s are two piece with a slip,,thats what i use for the hopper and bagged cars,,no come backs,,also when they are installed they must be at ride height.....jacked under the rear end or on a drive on lift....any problems mail me ,,i can build you one....vic
