    I hate lacquer.
    I hate alkyd enamel
I hate acrylic enamel (I really fuckin hate it!!)
I hate single stage (direct gloss) urethane
    I hate bc/cc systems.
    I hate primer
    I hate epoxy primer/sealer
    I hate sealer products
    I hate clear

Come to think of it, I hate spraying paint of any kind. If I spent the rest of my days never picking up a spray gun again I'd die happier than a 'GLOBAL' supporter in a sausage factory. No offense intended toward sausage...(!)

Notice how this went quiet relatively soon? Does this mean there's more love than hate? Does it mean not many folks paint? Does it mean most just don't know? I hope it doesn't mean I was too open with my angst about spraying anything

I don't think anyone said on the other thread that they hated lacquer, just pointed out some of the flaws of lacquer paint. In its day lacquer was an awesome paint, it is just that its day has long since passed.

Well, Oldsman here is the appropriate place where you can rant to your hearts content so have at 'er. A thread where a paint guy is asking what lacquer guys want and expect in a new low VOC lacquer?? Uh, not so much...

If it ever really got to the point where lacquer was truly gone, and unobtainable, that would be the direction I would go in.

Well I'm glad I'm not there. This was done in lacquer 2 weeks ago.:

The pictures don't do the depth and clarity any justice, but I will say it's truly as good as they look in the finished product. To add to the quality and diversity of lacquer, the rear fenders were simply glazed heavily and came out as deep as the new paint on the fronts. When nothing but the best and most profitable application will do, lacquer is where it's at.

We used to refer to nitrocellulose black lacquer as "Hearse black" because so many of them were painted after purchase because the nitro paint looked so much better than the stock paint.

Hate is a pretty strong term, all paints have there pros and cons. I have reconciled myself to realize that no matter what paint I use shit happens. If there is a spec of dust in the area I'm spraying it, it will find its way into the paint. The gun will malfunction, drip, error on my part in some way or form or something else. Its the way it is. I like lacquer with all its faults nothing looks like it.

Not being much of a painter I love lacquer because it is so easy to shoot and easy to fix if you make a mistake.I used to have to paint motorcycles pretty frequently and lacquer was definitely THE answer for the combination of small parts incorporating a lot of compound curves that comprise a motorcycle. Are you not supposed to wash your hands with lacquer thinner??!! I have been doing that since I was a teenager, did it yesterday in fact and I am 65. What does it do bad? I know that california says if you get enough of it it will harm you,but It must require a lot!

When I was a kid, one of my dads friends (I have no clue how to spell his name, but it was something like Art Feluka??) had a '33 or '34 Dietrich bodied Packard Victoria, I remember it as being a V-12. It was kind of a butterscotch colour with russet fenders and belt-line molding and a tan top. It looked pretty much like this car.

At one point in the late eighties, the car was in Victoria BC hotel owner, Murray Gannons car museum, but I am not sure if he actually owned it at that point, I think it was just there on display. What happened to it after that, I have no clue. I rode in this car several times as a kid. Are you familiar with it, or do you have any idea what happened to it?
Oh yea, just realized, I should add here, it was painted in lacquer...:p

I've been doing body and paint since 1975 or so, mostly serious hobby work, and part time bodyshop employ. Started with lacquer, have also done some really nice work in acrylic enamel, SS urethane, and BC/CC, lots of custom paint with HOK, again, starting with lacquer candy, progressing to Urethane candy.
Lots of pros and cons to each. Each has it's advantages, and applications. Lacquer definitely looks best, especially in custom paint. The look of Candy in lacquer is unbeatable! From time to time I still put some lacquer on cars. The last one was quite some time ago, when a customer wanted black nitrocellulose on his custom 53Merc. I did all the work and applied HOK epoxy as a base, then did it in R-M Double Deep Black nitro. It was one of the best, deep, reflective paint jobs I've done. It held up great over the years, when it was garaged and maintained. But he lost a bit of interest in the car, and it was relegated to an outside storage tent, covered up. This caused the lacquer to form tiny bubbles in the surface (15 years after it was finished) and began to crack. He brought it back to me for a scallop job, and the paint was starting to look pretty sad, and the tape pulled up a lot of the tiny bubbles.
This shot was when I got it back to do the scallops, so it had shrunk a bit and dulled out from being out of the garage, and not waxed/polished for a while. shop 006.jpg

Still love lacquer, have to have it discreetly sent here from Easterly sources... (CA. laws)
I've been shooting it since '55, mostly small stuff, chassis, running gear...shot my '32 Five window highboy with red Nitro in '58. Shot and rubbed that Deuce for a month.
Over and over...must have poked holes in the ozone, but California's still here...
    No mask, still straight...
There's a theory that the fumes over the years affected Californians. Made most of them 'light in the loafers'... :D

What's to hate? This was put on in 1931:

It's on this one off Peerless 16:

3800 original miles, stored in its own room when Peerless went into brewing beer instead of car production. That's an aluminum body too, and no, never restored. I posted this in "paint guru's" lacquer topic as well. Enjoy...

  25. Lacquer simply "looks right" on an old car. The mile deep bc/cc stuff not so much. I am definitely not a paint and body man, but I have stayed at many Holiday Inn Express in my time.
