I was just at a pretty big local cruise and was talkin to quite a few old timers about their cars. Same stories... I HAD THIS, I HAD THAT. It was awesome, don't get me wrong, but a lot of the guys that had old Fords were talkin about running three deuces. I think it would be awesome to run three deuces and have been looking into getting the set up. Only everytime I do, someone tells me what a pain they can be. So then I thought about goin with dual quads. Got to figuring that either option has difficulties im sure. I want my car to have a little giddy up. I basically just want to get everyones input on which is better/worse and for what reasons. Both are gonna gulp the gas, so thats not really a concern for right now. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!
Well, here's what this "old timer" says: Multiple carbs are cool, but can be a real pain in the a** to tune. And on most engines, from stock to pretty darn hot, you can accomplish the same horsepower and torque with a single 4bbl...and have much, much better driveability at the same time. Hot Rod Magazine does a dyno test on this very subject every few years and the results are always the same: a tiny edge to the triple deuces at the very top end, but the singe 4bbl dominates at all other ranges. Once you get your car running to it's maximum potential with a single 4bbl you can play with multiple carburetors...just don't expect much improvement, except in the "cool factor." Just my $.02 (By the way, I've got a set of three deuces (2GC's) for the Chevy motor my Victoria that has sat on my shop shelf for over a dozen years. The motor's got a Holley 4bbl on it now, which I'll use to get it running and sorted out in the car. Then I'll put the three deuces on it. Just between you and me...I can't wait to get the three carbs under the hood. There's just nothing like 'em visually!)
Missysdad is right. Three dueces are always cool but it is so much easier to deal with one 4 barrel on a daily basis, especially if you are not that proficient with tuning carbs. Also, if you're not real proficient with tuning carbs then you will probably make less horsepower with the triple setup. As far as two four barrels goes, unless you've got some monster powerhouse, there is no real reason for it.
Well once I got mine set up it isn't to bad to maintain. I use a vacuum gauge and uni-syc to adjust them once in a while. You sure can't beat the WOW factor when you open the hood tho. Three Stromberg 97's... Wow, I gotta down load some newer pictures, these are from a while ago. Notice the manifold isn't bolted down and the tiny battery I was using while I was rewiring the car. Funny what you notice AFTER you post... Ha
Thanks fellas. Single 4 barrel for now. Got it. Hahaha and sorry for the old timers comment. Everywhere I go I'm still considered a kid or youngster. I am only 23 so talking to someone who did this back in the day, to me, is an old timer. Back to the subject, I agree that the WOW factor is amazing with the three deuces. But I know nothing about tuning carbs so I will stick with a four barrel. I currently only have a 2 barrel on my engine right now. Once I get it up and running, then I'll switch it. Maybe we should start a thread for pictures of three deuces. Could be some pretty sick pictures. Thanks again.
Did you make the Sunday swap meet? I saw a yellow '54 business coupe in the parking lot but did not run across the owner or I would recruit him to the group.Did you get your wheel spacers?
Yeah I made it. Had an eye out for you, but never saw ya. As I was walkin up, that guy was driving out. It was a pretty nice little ride. Got the spacers, but havent had a chance to put them on yet. Score any good deals while you were there?
