I have a 1964 Chevy truck. Its a 283 with a three speed trans with over drive. It gets stuck in 2nd gear and will not shift out of it. How can I fix this? Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
I believe your linkage bushings under the hood are probably wore out causing the binding. I remember my uncle always unsticking his under the hood....not sure why he never just replaced the darn bushings.
The shift levers jam together, you have to reach under the hood and pull them apart. Repairs involve building up worn areas with welding or brazing then filing them down to size. Bushings should be available from your Chev dealer or vintage Chev parts store.
One thing to check.....at the very bottom of the steering column is a collar that has two bolts holding it on...If you loosen the two bolts, the collar has angled slots in it that allow you to take up any slack of the shift levers...this will help a lot....
The bushings you need to fix your shift linkage are as close as your nearest good hardware store. Take your old ones out, match up the outer diameter, and match the inner diameter to the diameter of the shift linkage that fits into it.
Something like these, perhaps? http://www.bobschevytrucks.com/1947-1966-truck-shift-rod-grommet-with-metal-bushing.html
The shifter lever that is closest to the firwall needs to be pushed up or down. Car needs to be on level ground or have someone push the clutch in while you do this. My dad's chevelle does this every so often.
Had to put a little weld on mine and shape them with a Dremel the edges get worn and round off and jam up I just made them square again if you know what I mean
Check this place out for bushings. They are the same for straight 6's and V8s Sorry, forget to paste the link. Here it is http://www.truckandcarshop.com/4759.html
