shortened my driveshaft and finished the basic for suspension. brakes are near working and gas pedal is close too. push bar is getting there and steering is close. lots left ...but it's all there to do . everything is figured out except spark advance and choke . i'll build my battery box and gas tank mounts while I wait for a bushing and seal for my steering box.

3springs 025.JPG thanks 64 dodge 440 . spent a week solid getting it this far in the latest thrash. so many details with a narrowed car . going to have to build a header as my exhaust is colliding with my brake pedal ...also ..looking for chunks from a gmc/chevy late 30s - 40s windshield. the lower passenger side of mine is rotted . so if anyone has a broken frame ,,,,let me know. I love the new windshield idea , better than the cut up Harley screen . the new frame strays away from art gerricks car but she is beginning to take a shape of her own.

I'd like to see more pictures of the front ax;e and springs. That is a really clean set up. Getting the springs outside was very popular in the day.

Thank you. I really like your car. I have a couple of '28 Chevy fours. One is complete. I'm putting a 153 in my roadster but it will be built so the old engine if ever built could be put in place. I have a Mopar tube axle but it's shape gives me less clearance when mounted above the spring. I think a Chevy will be better for me.

thanks . six ball. my axle has just over 1" clearance at the front to the bent down flange on my chevy frame . if I bend it up I will have 1.5 . and if that's not enough I will do a little c notch . the center of the swoop has more clearance than the sides because of the shape and stock x-member.

Can you post more info on the windshield you are making? Also, are the gas tank hold down straps stock chevy or did you make those? It's looking great.

Was it at all common to run transverse up front and parallel out back?

There are some. A friend had a '25 T with transverse in front with a Willys axle and 1/2 elliptic leafs with a Pontiac rear end. But as mentioned above it was early 60s.

I'll find a picture but you won't like it. It had a 305 small block/350 trans. It was originally built in the 60s but he fixed that.

    How do you know ;-)

I just wants to see how the it's build.
I'm in to era specific builds, regartless of era, car style or what people started with.

I'm not a big TBI/TPI fan, but almost any other SBC can be dressed acordingly! :-D

But I most say, 350 trans is for drag Racing, muscel cars born with it, hearses or the on legged man. ;-)

3 pedals is the way for me!!

I saw on a Web page on car builds (covair Crown conversion), that 90% of all cars has one thing in commen, from the model, over a anglia and up to Volvo of the late nintys; somewhere, sometime, someone shoehorn on a SBC, and drove it.

I thing the number comes closer to 98% but thats just me B-)

    Love the chevy build bct
I have asked this before about the transverse spring on the chevy axle. - How did you strengthen the backing plate for the spring mount as the chev backing plate is flexible while the T mount is part of the flange casting

thanks kume. I did answer in post 113. the backing plate is 3/16 thick and only an inch or so from the flange. I used a large washer to bridge that inch. no guarantees it won't bend tho.i recently got a set of speedwayish weld onT style spring mounts with some other parts and from the look they would work too.

my rear acts up? . no oil in it yet. when on jack stands wheels will turn nice one way and not the other . sometimes the other wheel spins opposite , sometimes not. until I find out if it is good I will leave it as is. I does feel like the weak link at the moment tho.... cuz engine runs good and trans shifts nice ,driveshaft was .005 run out after I welded it. shouldn't take long to shake down all the bugs after rear end is sorted

got lots done last week end ....fixed my gas tank valve . made some stout frame brackets for the brake levers. did some more wiring ....

    I have a question ...
.can I solder copper to steel?

I am looking to place a bung in the filler neck of my gas tank so I can pressurize . can't find a steel one to weld . I tried to make one with a pipe tap and broke my tap driver. the 7/16" recommended hole for a 1/4" npt is way too small .

any tips on tapping pipe thread?

You can solder copper to steel, or you could weld or braze a steel pipe fitting to it, (think 1/4 iron pipe coupling).

I havn't had much luck welding cast steel fittings . and I have never brazed anything since high school. I found a nice copper fitting in the plumbing section with 1/4"npt . I will fill my tank with water and try to solder it. the neck is soldered and riveted on (steel to steel) so it will be consistent. thanks 64

To solder copper to steel you will need to tin the steel.
