throttle linkages, fun fun fun.

  1. Simple engine swap...make the '56 pontiac accept a chevy engine and trans...a 250 inline for now, mounts will accept a sbc some day, IF I decide I really want to do that (I like sixes...so sue me).

    it's the little things that annoy me.

    making the engine mount...easy
    tranny mount...easy
    running fuel lines, brake lines, proportioning valve hidden away, converted to dual line master cylinder, tranny cooler, radiator moved forward to clear the fan but nothing cut to where it can't be put back when the SBC goes in, driveshaft made to mate the turbo 350 to the gennie pontiac rear...

    I get to the throttle linkage, and it's pissing me off.

    It would be easy to just use the modern pull-cable type, but no, not me...I have to be old fashioned and use the rods and levers and bellcranks:D I'm NOT complaining..really, I love this stuff, therapeutic fun here.

    This will be interesting, at least to those of us who still believe in using old technology on old cars...

    I'd love to see photos of what others have come up with when putting an engine under the hood of something it didn't belong in...

    The linkage is a bit hard to see, but it is all made from standard parts aviable at your local harware store.

    30s-50s chevy sixes as used in the older cars (to 48? 54?) and trucks up thru 59 had a relativly simple bellcrank system, with the first link being horizontal and connecting to the pedal itself and the bellcrank. should be easy to adapt?

    That diagram of the 59 truck one is close to what I was wanting to do, but the way things are routed is making mine have to go up along the firewall and then forward...luckily, my intake has a provision between the carb and the firewall, making it easy once I get something mounted higher up...I'll post pics once it's put together..

    I was just curious what other setups people have used, maybe I'm holding on to the past a bit too much wanting to use the levers and rods, but for some reason...I just like them better...

    I was thinking about this the other day. You know all new cars now are fly-by-wire. No longer a throttle linkage. Instead they have an expensive electronic servo motor actuated my an electronic pedal control, etc.

    Looking at the hard linkages, I wondered why they went to cables. I figured besides flexibility in designing. What I also realized, I could see where in a hard accident, the hard linkage could force the carbs wide open because the wouldn't give like a cable. Just a thought.

    I'm up against this currently too, probably should start a new
    thread but I'll throw it out here. 38 Chevy, stock 216,but with a
    dual carb intake and split exhaust. Problem being that the split
    manifold outlet in the rear is dead in the way of the throttle rod
    in the diagram above it is the rod from the pedal to the bellcrank.
    I'll try and get some pics tomorrow. Anybody been down this
    road??

    Mine is made from 3/8" brake line crimped and rounded at the ends. Easy to bend for the correct throw, and looks halfway clean too.
     
  8. I'm planning on running a split manifold in the near future too, that's why I've been trying to get mine to run up the firewall and then forward instead of forward to the block and up to the carb...just curious, you using the old carter W-1s on that intake, or something else?

    Man, brake line! that would be MUCH easier than this solid stainless stuff I've been cursed with...I'll have to try that.

    what I can see it looks like yours is behind the manifold?

    I'm somewhat in the same spot as you but not LOL...i've been tryin to figure out the geometry in making a floor shifter for my FMX, like you said its "thereputic fun" and i know once i figure it out it'll probably be something easy and stupid, but nothing beats that feeling when you think of something and it actually works...keep pluggin away!!!!
