Technical Tilt steering column rebuild

Hi, I have a 64-66 Pontiac floor shift tilt steering column With an external signal switch operated by a cable. I’m trying to rebuild it but I’m having trouble getting to the 4 screws. Three are out but the last one is covered by the bearing hub, how do I get to that last one? Is the collar just pressed on the hub?

any help would be great, it’s driving me crazy!

 

Did you look for it on Youtube? They have videos on how to repair almost anything.

I have a couple of non steering column videos on YouTube and I've been contavted several times with questions.

 

Chrysler licensed the GM designs for their Tilt-n-scope column. That's what I have. You might search for that,too. I'll see what I can find tomorrow.

 

Yes, those outer covers are pressed on and are fairly easy to buggar up and can be tricky without a factory style puller. I sort of copied the GM puller shown in the repair manual, it grips the cover but also catches the windows in the cover, one for the turn signal and one on the opposite side for the emergency flasher ****on.
I made this for a 67 GM tilt column but you should be able to make one for yours fairly easily, if you already have some sort of slide hammer you are half way there.

That one is a later column and way different than what he is working on. I've had a lot of those apart to tighten them up after my wife worked them loose pulling herself up in the seat with the steering wheel.

Thanks for the updates! I managed to get the collar off. The next struggle was the pins holding the tilting hub. I had to clean one side of the hub around the pin with with a very small dremel bit but then the pins pulled right out with access to the 4 screws holding the other half of the hub to the column. Thanks again everyone!

This is the best How-To I have found on rebuilding the GM tilt column. Key to those blasted 4 bolts is removing the two tilt axle pins. Complete tear down and rebuild is the only good way to do it right.
