Hot Rods Time for some new tires..suggestions?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, May 19, 2015.

  1. I have put it off way to long and although the tires have shown no significant wear or any signs of cracks,I think I've pushed my luck long enough.

With talk of changing your tires after about 7 years my radials are almost 18 years old and before I take off on the Deuce run I need to replace them.

I plan on keeping the rims so I will be looking for 15" tires,, I know it's ultimately up to me but what do you think would look good on my old beater?

I'm open to suggestions or Photoshop ideas. HRP

I would run blackwalls the same size as you have now.

I agree. The car looks very nice with the tire size you currently have. I would simply repeat and enjoy.

  5. Well as old and hard core as you are I would suggest some of them solid rubber tires like they used to use. LOL

I am just your basic black walls type of a guy or pinners on the front with black walls on the rear if I am shooting for that low buck I bought my grandmas old car look. But maybe just for a change on your old heap a set of whitewalls would fill the bill really well. Now, maybe I am just too baked to make a legitimate answer here. ;)

I don't think anything is going to look better than what you currently have on your 'old beater', man I would love to have an old beater like that, so I would just buy some more similar to what is on it now.

From the picture I think the car looks great as is. I'd use the same size tires and call it good.

Good luck finding 15 " tires , let alone reasonably priced. I got lucky & found 2 275 60R-15 NOS , they were the last 2 that were in stock & are out of production

  9. o_O:confused: Remind me not to ever blow a tire in your town I never have a problem finding 15" tires new around here. Or in a pinch you could buy *affordable tires from Diamond Back.

*Affordable being a nominal term here.

Like the same size blackwalls as well. The last few sets of tires I've bought recently have been Kumhos and Hankooks. No complaints with either brand.

Yeah , living in the "asshole of universe" does have it's drawbacks ...

  14. Actually KC is the asshole of the universe. I know because they forecast hail the other day and I walked outside and got smacked in the head by a big ol' suppository. :D

If no one makes 15s no one here knows about it. Maybe its because I buy off brands like cooper's or Kelly's generally.

    These were cooper cobras !!

  16. I have Hankooks on my Ford from Tire Rack, set me back a total of $302 with shipping. Saved a lot of $$ avoiding the BS taxes that go with going to a local tire store.

  17. I ran cobras on the pusher, cooper has discontinued the Cobra not 15" tires. The only reason I know that is because I called the other day about a price on 15" Cobras for a project I am thinking about and the guy told me they no longer make the cobra then rattled off a list of tires that are like them. Damned shame I liked the cobras for an everyday driving around tire and once annually race tire.

Well off on a rabbit trail I see the hole up ahead. "GET BACK Luretta!!!!"

I think the tires on the old heap look good, I probably wouldn't change the look but I am just lazy that way. ;)

I know a guy who just bought 6 Cooper Cobra's in the last month. 275/60, 255/60 and a 235/60. Unless his are NOS. I guess we should look at the dates on them. To my knowledge you can get about any size 15" tire now that you could 15 years ago. Obviously not as cheap as they were back then.

  20. They could have just quite making cobras last week for all I know. There is probably an announcement if someone was a mind to google it.

I just bought 2 sets of Cooper Cobras from Discount tire direct (225/70/15, 255/70/15, 275/60/15) and Coopers web page says nothing about them being discontinued.

Go with what you're running, but new, they look right on.

  23. I was just quoting what the dick at the cooper store told me. Maybe he hasn't seen the site yet?

point was that they didn't discontinue 15" tires.

If you must run radials, at least buy some that have an American name...

  25. maybe keep the same type of tires but change up the wheels to get a different look?

We just went through this on the Speed Wagon. We couldn't find any radials that suited us, so we went back to bias ply. Hopefully, you'll have better luck with 15s for your ride. We ordered a couple of the expensive Coker Excelsior radials. The 600-6.50s were too small, and the 7.00-7.50s were too big. We needed a straight up 7.00.

If they weren't nearly $300 per tire, it wouldn't be such a big deal; but I don't understand why they put so much effort into building a radial tire that looks vintage with the pretty Excelsior script and then stamp SPORT RADIAL in ugly block letters?

This is the 6.00-6.50 on a 17" wheel. I'm sure you'll have better luck searching for wide oval tires. I like tall tires all the way around.

  29. Coker Tire has Radial TA's in 15. You'll need to go to them if you want littles in front but I think the other online retailers carry the larger sizes still. I have a set that I bought that way before I changed directions on my build.

The other side of the tire is black.

  30. LOLI have purchased them since then and no one said a thing about them not being available and another guy says that his 'puter says they still exist.

really doesn't matter I suppose as long as you can still get 15" tires, right? :D
