When we moved out to the "country" in 1993, we got 4 acres, no zoning restrictions, a place for horses, and a bunch of crappy outbuildings. First thing I needed to do was build a shop, so I built a little 30 x 44 stick building, well insulated, finished inside, etc. It's treated me well, I've built a few fun cars in it. But it's showing it's age....so this week's project is to put a roof on it.

And a few of the toys I've worked on inside. I didn't show the late models, or other folk's cars.

I have been mostly retired for a while...maybe not retired, but lazy...my wife recently retired, so now I'm officially retired, too.

She made decent money, I got real lucky when she found me

ugghhh shingles . must be the year for it we have to do our buildings ( 2 50 x 300 $51, 000 ) starting next week
, and a old pole barn 40 x 100 ( $25, 000 peel off shingles, roll roof and underlay and going to steel roof ) ,
I am suprised you didn't go with a steel roof , its more but is cheaper over the years ( our old farm house roof is over 100 years old and rusted but doesn't leak and looks like a golf ball from all the hail its seen over the years )

stay hydrated and safe up there .

Jim you are looking at a 15 yr old roof.
I'd say it's still good for another 10.
The important thing is the ease of installation and the price.
You won't believe the cost comparison to steel. Called Ondura. Found at Lowes.

One day I'll make that move to the desert as well. California desert to be close to the fam. Nice international truck. Take your time in your repairs. Work around the sun like morning and Sun down.

Keep buying those shingles! That is my load 95% of the time, so the more folks buy, the more I get to work!

it's cool (below 90) and windy today, it doesn't really get hot here (over 100) till June. The wind is not fun...but it's gotta get done before rainy season hits in late June.

I looked into metal roofs, decided against it...if I can get 20 years out of these shingles, I'll probably be at that age where I'm either dead, or moved, or wise enough to pay someone to do it. I'll have way less than $2k in this job.

That will put you at about 62..I doubt that you will slow down that much but if you choose to not do the work I think you will have more problem finding someone to do an acceptable job; easier to do yourself and right!

I got a shot to prevent shingles. Guess I will have to use steel roofing on my shop now.

We talked about a roof on the way to brunch today.Powder coated steel will be my next garage-shop choice. The moss will have a hard time sticking to it and I can hose it off real easy .Iam done with the tar shingles stuff .Snow will melt and slide off better too.

Got to do the street side of my garage roof this summer, that will free up the pallet size spot inside the garage were the shingles have lived for two years. Bob

  23. You're living the dream. I thought I'd be living in the southwest by now. Particularly in New Mexico. I don't belong in Milwaukee area, too restricted. But work is good and I'll keep dreaming.
I can vision myself as a senior citizen living in a remote area in the Southwest ...with a shotgun. "Hey feller, what are youse doing on my property?" You're not from these parts are youse? "Best to move along".
By the way, those Apaches/GMCs(?) are dynamite!

I paid someone to do the garage roof about 5 years ago, and then paid the same people to do the house roof about 3 years ago. I'm hoping those are the last roofs I have to worry about. It would have cost me a lot more for medical expenses for me to do my roofs then it cost to pay someone else to do them. A roofer I will never be. I'm not much of a carpenter either.
Its just as important for a guy to know what he can't do, as it is to know what he can do. Gene

Love those Apaches. The extended cab is dynamite. I sort of wish my short stepside was a short Fleetside. Don't fall off the roof.
