I guess it is time to start posting pictures of my ’31 coupe project. I started it in Nov or Dec of last year and it has been a slow process. The coupe was a parts chaser at Haberfeld Ford in Bakersfield, CA. During the depression they removed the trunk lid and installed one of the after market pickup beds to make it a commercial vehicle so it would not be rationed on gas. (This information has been p***ed to me from someone who’s Dad worked there). Over the years the pickup bed started tearing the body apart, parts was removed and the frame disappeared. Rust also had its hand in the decay of the coupe. I will show the pictures as I started but I never took a picture with the pickup bed in the car because I thought I would never put it back on the road again.

I will post more pictures as I started getting it put together. I will throw in the motor picture here and will post some of building the motor. I have chopped the top 3 inches but a lot left to do. I am also setting it up to run without a distributor; the coils will be inside the car mounted on the firewall.

If the distributor is a problem as being not traditional or too modern I will byp*** that part.

    More pictures tomorrow.

so when you say that you're going to run it without a distributor, exactly how do you plan on doing that?

also i really like your choice of engine colors. very forties. very industrial.

Ford truck, late 30's to 40's. Comes with a heavy-duty truck ****** attached, so most guys overlook them

  5. Let me make an educated guess a crank trigger mayhaps an MSD uinit with Flying magnets bolted to the lower pully.

Ok so now how about filling us in on the real scoop, what did you adapt to make it run minus the dizzy???

The ECU (control unit) will handle all the timing and can be programmed thru a laptop. I will be installing a vacuum, air temperature, and exhaust sensors to have input for the ECU. It can also be set up with a knock sensor. I will start it up on carburetors and after the bugs are worked out I will install fuel injection that I have about 75% completed. The ECU then will control the fuel system also. I hope I can just get it to start when the time comes to fire it.

Looks like a world cl*** project and I applaud the tasteful engineering upgrades. Thanks for the close up of the wood top also. I need all the tips I can get with my coupe body.

    Nice work, love the color.

What kind of throttle bodies/****erflies will you use?

  14. Yeow. Very cool work all around. I've run a full flow oil system on my flathead too. Can you post a pic that shows how you mounted the oil filter? I like the way it seems to be attached to the oil pan.

    Great stuff.

Her are more pictures, hope you aren’t getting tired of them.

I drilled and tapped the oil filter bracket before welding it into position on the oil pan (no holes to leak oil from). I welded it to the rail reinforcing plate and s***ched it to the oil pan (very solid).

I am making the fuel injection as per the above picture. I am using Stromberg ****erflies. I still need more work on the most completed one to make it more presentable.

This is some of the port work done on the motor. I read one of the H.A.M.B. posts about the porting and where to buy the abrasives and they sure made the job easier.

This is really good stuff. I like the way that you are doing it yourself and keeping the components hidden.

    That motor rules!
I love your fuel injection setup.

What ECU are you going to be using?
Are you going to be using a MAP sensor?

Vergil, that is my favorite flathead, ever. I hope Ryan mentions it and the REAL hot rodding behind it on the jalopyjournal. Thank you for not resorting to off the shelf parts, that Hall Effect crank sensor is very mechanical looking and beautiful.

For some reason I can see it with forced induction, maybe a pair of turbochargers or a direct-drive (mounted on the front of the crank) supercharger. Hmmm.

    Nice work.
