Technical Timing a 276 DeSoto Hemi

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Stephen Lovelady, Nov 28, 2017.

  1. My 52 DeSoto Firedome with the 276 and semi auto trans cannot keep time. I can get it set to 4 degrees BTC but after a road test it is either too far advanced or too far retarded at idle.

For the record, I've replaced the dual points with a Pertronix 6v unit, replaced the vacuum chamber with the correct replacement part, correct cap, rotor, and upgraded 8MM wires. Up until a few weeks ago, it was running great and I could get up to highway speeds with no issue. Now I'm able to get to around 60 if I'm easy on the throttle. WOT, though, she will spit, sputter, backfire, etc... when initial timing is set at 4 before TDC. However, I see a bit of wavering of the mark at idle indicative of a stretched timing chain.

My solution will be to replace the chain. I see its not much different than a small block Chevy. While I'm at it, I'm pulling the oil pan as it has a slight leak and there is a ton of sludge in the bottom. I'm guessing part of my problem could be hunks if junk being pulled into the lifters and valve guides which could be making them stick. A precaution if nothing else.

So has anyone ever done a low deck Hemi timing chain R&R? It seems straight forward in the removal of the water pump, fuel pump, etc... as well as a hidden bolt inside the case. Taking a step further ( and for room to work ) I'm removing the radiator. Have to drain the coolant anyway so I might as well drain the block while I'm at it. Finally located the pet****s on either side of the engine. I can take a look at what comes out that way as well.

I plan on using a puller/installer from O'Reilley to make sure I've got the right tool. Any suggestions on a puller/installer would be helpful.

Ok, any suggestions? I think I've my ducks in a row but hoping to cover my bases with the community. If you've got any advance I'm all ears. Or in this medium, all eyes.
