This is a timing chain cover for a '47 Nash 600 business coupe. Can anyone tell me if the inner stamped Crank seal presses out? I haven't come across anything quite like this before. Appears to be a felt lining that surrounds the crank, and a large lip on the inside of the cover. Thanks.
possibly a rope seal, if you could get on a Nash group perhaps antique automobile club of America you could find info to maybe update to modern seal? Our Nailhead had a rope seal and after talking with some people found a modern seal to replace that rope seal. Good Luck
I am presently cleaning up an International BG 241 inline 6 engine and replacing old seals. The timing "gear" cover has a felt lined seal that was tack welded into the inside of timing cover. I guess in those days they still didn't have reliable rubber for seals and didn't realize these engines would still be around in 60+ years for ease of replacement. I suspect they just replaced the felt in the old days. I would check out all the usual online sites (rockauto & napa) for a replacement seal. Still haven't figured mine out 100%. Good luck.
Thanks guys. I'll do some snooping for a few options here. If I can just purchase a new rope seal I might opt for that.. Seems easiest to leave the insert in place. I was about to powdercoat it but glad i held off. I'll post up in my '47 Nash' build thread when I figure it out. dirtcop, please send me a PM if you remember once you figure yours out. Looks like we're basically dealing with the same thing. BG
