Timing Chain Y-Block (272)

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HillBillytheKid, Jan 1, 2005.

  1. Anyone know how much slack side to side there should be on a 272 Y-block's Timing chain?

  2. I found 12 links between marks. I know that's not what your looking for but I have 1 more place to look.

  3. I found 12 links again in my 2nd source. How much do you have? Are you reusing an old chain? Just a guess but 3/8" seems max to me.

Well we are trying to figure out if the previous guy reused an old chain. The engine has been rebuilt in the past, but the chain has some slack it seems. more slack that would be expected with the condition of the rest of the engine. I'll try to get the pics posted.

    I agree w/ Feder

Replace it! - Gears, too. When I rebuilt my 292 to 324, found a double roller chain and gear set for about $80 delivered. Haven't looked but would think stock stuff could be had for $50. Don't just take the first price you see as all that is out there . . I've seen lots of stuff for Y Blocks where I saved 25-40% by just continuing to shop

You guys are funny... Just replace it if it seems to have to much slack. I assume you have not run this yet? If its out of the truck just put a new one in.

Funny huh? We're on a very tight budget. I finally found one for $54 but the real reason is that we wanted to get it together today. Didn't happen. Everything else seems like it was recently rebuilt so we thought it might have been replaced and the slack is normal. We've never done a y-block before, don't know what normal is.

As I said the factory maximum spec is 1/2". Looking from the front the right side is the drive side. You want to take up the slack over there and measure the OUTWARD deflection on the left side.
Id find it hard to believe that someone rebuilding an engine as costly as a Y would reuse the old chain.
