Timing: ISKY 3/4 Max 1 on an 8BA

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Baron Von Mike, Nov 15, 2004.

  1. So I got this little guy installed: Isky 3/4 Max 1

and now I'm trying to set the timing. I've hunted around a little, and I think I know how to read that chart up above, but I'm asking here. I'm wondering what the proper BTDC timing is at idle (about 500rpm) and at somewhere like 3600 RPM.

I have a Mallory Unilite electronic dizzy.

    Thanks,

    Mike

Check the current issue of Street Rodder. Has a dyno test of a flatmotor with that cam. Probably not exactly like yours, but you can probably get a place to start.

    Thanks Smalls,

That pdf helps. As far as I can tell I need to start at somewhere between 4 and 8 deg BTDC. Some people on this board have said the timing mark on the 8BA crank pulley is set up at some amount BTDC, but I don't believe this is true of mine. I set TDC with the heads off, and the pully timing mark lined up pretty much exactly with the timing mark on the block.

In a couple weeks, I'll post a somewhat lengthy tech on installing my 50 motor in a 41 truck, with pics [IMG]. I think it will help with your project and with some of the questions I've seen flying around lately regarding generators, pumps, transmissions, open driveline conversion, etc.

Did you set the cam st up? If you did, set the lead at 8 Deg. If you retarded or advanced it, then you will have to play with it somewhat as they all seem a little different.--TV [IMG]

Straight up. 8 deg, thanks! I've been making a few timing marks on my pulley, so it will be easier to set this stuff. My pulley is 6" in diameter. Multiply by PI and you have circumference in inches. Divide by 360 and you have amount of inches per deg.

By the way, you should really like that cam. Most people go with the 400 junior, but I think the Max-1 is the better cam. My son has one in his 40 coupe, sounds good and runs even better.--TV [IMG]

Did you check your cam with a degree wheel?
Me and a friend just had some big problems with isky f/h cams and ended up sending 4 back. I believe they had to make new master to fix the problem.

I'm not having problems with the cam. Actually, I think I'm done with timing stuff. Now I have to get my dual carb setup working correctly. Only runs correctly with about 25% choke.

    Thanks for all the help!

Mike ,check for vacuum leaks around the carbs and manafold. I had one almost eat me alive a while back. The engine would run fine until it wormed up, then shoot ducks under a load. Had to check it 6 times to find the very small vac. leak. Usuly when you have to use the choke to keep it running you have a vac leak someplace.--TV [IMG]

I was just trying to let you know that iskys cams are or were kinda screwed up.
We had 4 cams and they all had major valve timing issues. One for instance had the intake opening 14 degrees late. These cams were checked by 3 different guys that all know there shit.

Thanks for the heads up, but I'm not having issues like that. Once I choke the engine it runs smoothly at all rpms, so I think I'm on to vac leak finding or rejetting. We'll see what I turn up this weekend.

Thanks again for all the input.

I have the Isky Max 1 in an 8BA with a Mallory dual point. I have the ignition timing set at 4 degrees BTDC at idle, about 1/4 in. from the timing mark. I also found that the timing mark on the crank pulley is at 0 degrees. I trusted Mallory to have the total advance correct. The motor runs excellent. The old Motors Manual I have says to set the timing on the mark but that's with the original distributors vacuum advance disconnected. The original distributor will advance about 4 degrees at idle when the vacuum hose is hooked up. I hope you used good quality lifters. I got a soft set from Hot Rod and Custom Supply and had to redo the whole valve train. The motor was ticking like it had a collapsed hyd. lifter; it had a collapsed hollow solid lifter. Screwed up the first Max 1 also. Happy flatheadin'

I have Johnson adjustable lifters, but don't know where they came from. Not giving me any problems. The motor already has 3000 miles on it with this cam/lifter setup. I tore it down for some other work, and didn't know where to set the timing as someone else set it up the other go round.
