Timing mark for Nailhead

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by El Guapo, May 14, 2009.

  1. Need help from the Nailhead owners out there. I have this 64 Rivi with a 401 and currently runs. I tried to put a timing light to it the other day but I cannot find the mark. Number one is located on left side front, but I cannot see the mark on the balancer. The car runs fine with a slight miss, but shouldn't the mark be close? I know there is a mark there because I marked it with paint to make it easier to see. Could it be possible that the timing chain jumped and if so would it still run ok?

I don't know which way your facing when you say "left side front " when refering to cyl. #1 location but, ...... #1 is front cyl. on p***enger side.:)

  3. Exactly..........Nailhead is different from most motors.

  4. Just did mine last night and these gents are correct, P*** front cylinder is #1. I also like to mark both lines with soapstone, makes it much easier to see in my dimly lit cave of a shop.

  5. That's the one I put the lead on for the timing light and still cannot see the marker. As I said before the car drives as I brought it to work all week, but I wanted to make sure the timing was ok when I did the carb swap.
