what is the differance in inches between a SBC timing mark for a 350 with the timing on top(12 O'clock) to the timing mark at about 2 O'clock? The damper we're using is off & I would just like to measure the distance & paint a mark on it. thanks JimV

The timing cover should have a TDC timing mark on it. What else, specifically, are you looking for? ( Your qustion isn't clear I guess.)
I think he's saying that his had another mark a few inches away, for setting total timing or something (?), and he wants to repaint another one on there where it was before he cleaned up the dampener. I don't think mine has that other mark.

[/ QUOTE ] OK, If you want to mark an "all in" mark at some degree. measure the cicumference of the dampener, or the diameter and multiply by pi (3.1416) and then divide that nomber by 360 (degrees) then multiply that by the number of degrees you want to put the mark. I just measured the dampener out of my '60 Chevy (different years had different diameters so measure your own) and it is 6.75" in diameter, and I'm going to mark it at 38º BTDC. 6.75 x 3.1416 = 21.2058 / 360 = .058905 x 38 = 2.23839" SO then you measure around the circumference 2.24" from the cut TDC mark and there it is. If you're not sure which way to mark it mark it both ways, it'll only run on one of them though... Easy!
let me get this straight.. the dampener was off at 12 O'clock, you want to paint it at 2 O'clock and you want to measure the difference in inches? Paul
if i was you i'd make sure the rubber insert on the dampener isn't SLIPPING? that thing could be ready to fly apart-george
He's right guys.... Not all of the balancer/timing cover combos had the timing tab at 2'o clock... Some were set up with it at 12'o clock... He has a mix-N-match setup and wants to know how to make it work.
the original timing degree marker was a hole on top of the timing chain cover, So you would be looking down on the marker to check timing( Hence the 12 o'clock referance) Theres a chrome timing chain cover now with a aftermarket indicator thats at about the 2 o'clock position!! so to set the timing now you have to look from the side!! re-establish true TDC using a piston stop screwed into the #1 sparkplug hole. first roll the motor over one way then the other marking both stopping points using the 0 on the new tab and split the difference. Paul
The ealry SBC's had the timing mark on the damper at about 2 o'clock when facing from the front. Later ones changed to 12 o'clock . Why can't you just get the pointer that correspnds to the damper you have?
