Went looking for photos of the green I had in mind when I say the ford green this one obviously looks a little different because that red firewall is a high contrast but this one actually has a firewall that’s the color I’m painting the car or at least close enough. The firewall will be black as well as the fenders and grill so I guess the play between the dutches blue and sorta olive color of the block won’t be as strong as I was thinking it may be. and of course a red one with some cast goodies...
Picking away at it. im thinking I can slice right on this seem and push the firewall back the small amount I need a little filler strip and done deal. I might actually cut this spare one and push it around just to see if it it works or not. made a little template for a plate mount. Gonna try it in 1/16 thick plate and see if it works. If it seems like it’s going to flex to much I’ll do it again in 1/8 thick. just a quick shot showing how close this hammer tone silver comes to a newly cast aluminum piece. Not bad!
Cool......hey, if I send you a short piece of video I made this afternoon, can you post it? I'm old and stupid when it comes to that shit.
I like the valve cover paint, Hammer Tone Silver? For the engine I like the green and I like machinery gray like old lathes and mills. Gray is nice because everything dress it up.
There really is. I think I’m leaning towards a red block, cast aluminum or similar painted valve cover, side plate, intake, carb adapter, water neck/ thermostat housing, and a white headed for now any how lol
I'm kinda partial to the red block and cast valve cover idea. That's my vote. Sent from my rotary phone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Early in my 153 build I planned to do the same thing I had done to the 270 GMC in my pickup. Which was to paint the head, block and pan dark cast iron gray and then buff the sheet metal parts with Scotchbrite to a semi-sheen. There are also some aluminum parts. I really liked the look but a couple of trips to Bonneville took their toll on the sheetmetal. The clear I used was not enough protection. Next time I'll powder coat it. For the 153 I even tried to cut down a GMC valve cover but it was too much for me. They are not as straight as they look and the metal is thin. Grinding the welds made holes. I think I know how to do it now, maybe someday. But the hand buffed sheet metal really looks good, I think. And it costs next nothing.
Does look slick! I’d contemplated polishing the cast iron intake but it sounded like up keep I knew I wasn’t going to want. Knocked some more off with a flap disc and painted the intake, water neck and the o state housing. could have done better prep but it’s better than the last one so I guess it’ll work
Snapped this photo of a little detail I found in an 07 hopup magazine. Check out the tabs on the intake/ exhaust bolts. The intake is bolted on top of the header flange and then bolted on. Kinda clever! Been playing with ideas of how I’ll bolt my stuff together. Thinking likely I’ll use thick header flanges and then weld a little shim/ washer to it to make up the thickness difference and use the stock hold downs
... @Tim, there are profiled cutouts in the flange to allow the intake pass through to the flange to meet the Head/Block proper and the angle brackets hold the Header flange to the Head/Block utilizing the Studs provided If that's what your saying it doesn't read as such...and yes it's a banger masterpiece of course... That Header flage needs to be robust as with only 2 brackets holding that header Tight its easy to see the possibility of leakage outboard of those studs...It is what it is I suppose...and a design element of this engine.
Oh you are right, I thought it was stacked as ice seen others stacked before. I was mainly focused on the little angle brackets. My engine has more bolts to hold it all on but they still use a bolt in the middle between the intake and exhaust with a little rocker arm looking piece of hardware to clamp each side down
Took a couple minutes and bolted everything together. Looks like the valve cover isn’t touching the fire wall it’s just close and it had shifted back a little when I was messing around with it when the bolts where out. still needs a little room but with the water neck off it went right on fine. I marked the firewall to make note of where I need to clearance it a little and I’ll do it when it’s easier to get to. Also need to take some more off the back side of the water neck/ thermostat. Maybe a 1/16 or 1/8 th anyhow I also got my template done for the block off plate. Cereal box, razor blade, hole punch and some transfer punches looks pretty good all together though my crusty carb looks extra crusty now lol. thinking I’ll do the block red, the header matte black, the fan and pulleys black as well
Felt weird to do it but arranged a contactless pickup and got some more parts to move forward a little more on the A. I miss bullshitting in driveways. anyhow scored this fantastic stromberg 48.seems to be NOS. If not I don’t know if it was ever run it’s very clean and dry. The butterfly’s are dirty but it looks closer to shelf wear somewhere humid more than anything. i don’t really know anything about them outside of them looking like a 97 but flowing more with the larger venturis. Maybe @carbking can fill me in on these? From what I gather it takes the same kit/ parts as a 97. I’m also curious about the throttle arm on the choke linkage side on these. I see it labeled a hand throttle in places, the only thing I can thing of is maybe it doesn’t have a fast idle tied to the choke and so you do it manually? Either way I’m a throttle arm away from being g able to connect the pedal to the carb also got another pair of 36 wires. I want to have the same wheels for the spares and figure if I have 6 I’ve got better odds of finding 4 good ones to run on the car full time. also got some reading material! Very excited after thumbing threw them quickly. I also got the parking brake lever assembly but forgot to take a photo of it. havnt messed with the car much the last couple days but progress is creeping along
Parking brake! No idea what it’s from. Old ford is as far as I’ve got so far. Got some old plating in it but it’s to far gone to bother trying to save.
Spent far to much time trying to make a jig to center mark the master cylinder holes only to find everything is so tight that I couldnt get a hammer in there anyways. Go figure. anyhow I stuck an old tracing on the firewall and measured a couple times and popped some holes in the firewall. They are a little off from dead center but I think they are close enough for a start. Not sure if I’ll try hole sawing it or using a jig saw to cut them Good enough for a quick mock up anyways you slice it. took a bunch of photos to kinda show how close everything is to the carb. I mocked up a 40’s ford master even though I’ve been talking about the wilwood unit because, well I have it. That and with their placement I might use them because they are shorter by almost two inches and will clear the hood easier. these photos have the master further forward than they would be because a 1/4 inch or more goes into the firewall and this one also has a couple fittings and a brake light switch attached to it where I would be more likely to run a quick 90 deg down or maybe a banjo bolt straight down. That shaves off at least an inch. still very tight when it comes to an air cleaner but there’s room
Hey I might want in on this.. 3 flatheads there man he’d be up against almost 300 hp [emoji23] Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Once you get in the race mode there is no end to it. " It's pretty quick for a ......." is never enough. The fun mode is much more obtainable and affordable. "......and it's pretty quick too."
You can't afford not to race against a flathead. The only thing they race against at Bonneville is each other. The other vintage engines are thrown together, other than the 4s.
Not a lot going on right now, just arm chair sending @Austin kays ideas and help on chopping his A. mostly making plans for when I can go buy metal in a few weeks and work on some more little projects. My “spare” times when the kids are asleep right now has been dedicated to getting ready to open our shop back up in a couple weeks and getting ready to go back to work. hopefully I’ll have some more progress in the coming weeks
Well you’ve been a hell of an arm chair hotrod builder. Any time I’ve been unsure or had a question it’s been nice to have you in my corner with a positive answer or help. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
@Austin kays just paying it forward in the last twenty plus years of being on the hamb I’ve bugged the shit out of a couple of these guys so much I’m surprised they haven’t “lost my number” Instead now my kids call them uncles you’re doin good glad to see that flame sparked again. A buddy sent me this about the hand idle on the carb “Reading online they say for field truck use, taking off on a hill, and idle high enough so the generator actually charges. So you can have the car sit longer and charge since generators don't charge at an idle.” Makes enough since. Might go ahead and hook it up? Went threw the garage and the immediate projects and made a list of hardware I’m needing with length, size, thread and how many I need. My wife got me a lanyard with a male and female end for probably 16 standard and metric sizes in both fine and coarse thread and it’s been so handy to not even have to take a part off the car to figure out the thread. Just screw it on like a nut or bolt! I’d never even seen one like this before. Mega handy. I’ll have to take a photo if I havnt shared one already. figure I want me trips to the store as fast as possible these days so I want to know exactly what I need.
