Projects Timm builds a model A

  1. They are just welded on the backside. Ron Fournier has a whole section on this in hiscfabricators handbook

This might give you some ideas, I mounted my A/C and alternator down low on my 250. The small alternator works really good, keeps up with A/C and ignition just fine.

That is great! You could sell those. I could use that Idea for the alternator and PS pump on the 292 I'm building for my flatbed.

It works good after I added a second belt from water pump to crank. There is only 90 degrees of contact on the crank pulley for the water pump and a/c belt. It would slip pretty easy, so I added a belt from water pump back to crank. It solved all the slip problems. My '37 truck frame had enough room to squeeze it in, but raising it up some would still give you room for a small alternator.

clever idea If I had the space!

Hit pause on the A so I could do some work on the 46 but Ryan’s been patching up my torn and thinned out areas of the hood shelves.
    C29DCF2A-F449-4BB9-A0EB-0CDB9BB8494E.jpeg
said he’s about 5 hours in because it’s just so damn thin. He’ll leave it rough on the back side to keep thickness and smooth the top visa or side enough for me to body work later

it’s not always pretty work saving worn out parts to stay on a budget but it’s fun bringing stuff back

Did he weld a plate on the back or just build with weld?

Kinda both. I’ll show it when it’s done.*****s really thin even to patch on. Might have been smarter to find a better pair but here we are

After a few blow threes they are done as they are getting welding wise. These things are so thin they sounded like a throw away tin foil baking tray in the back of my car on the way home.

Probably because the chassis flexes so much in the front ? They’d likely crack if they were thicker is my guess.

Either way he used some stainless filler and just took hi time tigging it up. Some of the homes were torn and others just had worn threw flat areas. He said it was like welding a razor blade 333EFD9B-C083-46BE-A99C-9037722D7595.jpeg left the back side rougher since you can’t see it anyways. I think the plate in the one photo was just for a backer

Oh yeah! 34F1F53B-B988-4886-8453-5046F577BAD5.jpeg Been a minute since I had them laid on.covers up everything so nice! Also gives me an idea of how much I’ll need to bump everything around to get it all bolted together haha. 10944CDC-5813-4E30-A777-5E67F6D58054.jpeg we’ll need to section this little foot a little to account for the thickness of the steering box mount.

    pretty happy over all

Got a much straighter rust free ish hood last night along with some other Smalls. It’s got maybe 1/8 inch of solidified oil all over it. A little thinner on top but this thing is nasty. Lol like I left it in the driveway hoping it would get rained on last night.

spent 30/40 minutes with a high pressure hose sprayer, a dish of dawn and a scrubber. Got close to getting the outside at least smooth. The louvers and still just gross. Blew some off the inside and left it to dry for the day while I’m at work. It’ll probably take another hour and a half to get this thing clean.

Just when you figure out how to get the rust off you have to go out and find something covered in something else.

When I got the 270 GMC thats in my pickup there was cooked on grease and dirt that a professional steam cleaner couldn't get off. There are much better products and methods now. Or maybe I've just learned from other guys.

This stuff is still so gummy that I knew it wasn’t going to let go and flake off and it wasn’t going to get hot enough to liquefy and run off.

I took down dawn and the scrub brush and just lathered it up and let it sit for a while before spraying and scrubbing it off. If it works for nasty shut in a baking sheet should work for this lol.

The inside of the hood is the worst I’ll probably have to let it soak in suds a few times before I really make progress unless I really really scrub the shut out of it.

I’ll probably end up doing a bit of both

6DC43352-29AA-4DCA-9EE9-0EEA21B8AC76.jpeg So much oil that the louvers were nearly blocked off on the inside. Got another 40 minutes in today, focused on the inside. Minimal scrubbing a lot of soup suds, wait, spray it off and repeat.

lots of shinny clean metal under there though!

It’s 110 with the heat index this morning so figured I’d let it sit in the sun to dry and bake and give it another go tomorrow or the next day. 9DDAC3C6-5279-4E8C-90B5-3DD662687EFF.jpeg BE0AF1F1-D267-4B75-A941-F888F81D0CB7.jpeg 6A8F194D-9496-4B3A-B69C-B08D935B1C89.jpeg F663EDE8-38CF-4340-ADAF-D26C143EED6A.jpeg

I havnt, I might though. This*****er is nasty.

ive got a 75 cent car wash down the road that has super hot water and under chassis de greaser soap. Probably give it another hour of scrubbing and then give the car wash a shot

Whatever it takes it looks like that hood is worth it. It may just take some time for the degreasers to penetrate it.
