153 & 181 rods are the same length but the big end on the 181 is bigger, Same difference and early and later small block as they use the same beatings. So with the 181 crank I used 181 rods. There could be a little more stroke gain by offset grinding the crank and using 153 rods. I've been reading about painting the inside of lights white. It seems to be more reflective than either chrome or silver paint. So that would definitely brighten the area. You might have to wear you welding helmet to work on your engine.
Yeah I’m painting the under side of the dash and cowl top white so I can see better. Trent my hesitation is running the car hood less I’m not sure if I like an off white firewall with the body being dutches blue, the grill, fenders, visor, roof all black. thinking my block will be red. I like the idea that from a distance if the firewall is black and the masters/ oil filter etc are all black they settle into the background pretty quick and don’t necessarily catch your eye.
Don't do the red block unless you are 100% sure. I did on the T and it grew old in about two weeks. When George freshened it up he painted the block black, looks much better now
What's wrong with a dark body, white FW, and red engine. I feel attacked lol. White firewall gives function. Hotrods were all based in function originally right. -Adam Sent from my rotary phone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Paint the engine the same blue as the body. The firewall off white a little to the cream side. Not sure about the hood. If you need more light you could lift both sides.
Personally I would paint the underside of the hood and the block white. Leave the firewall and master black. Reason: leaks show up better on a light colour, and the white underhood will make any chrome look brighter. Dark firewall will hide master and stuff as Tim mentioned
Picking at it again. Got stuff to hopefully Fix the 46 today and mock up some more air cleaner bits. All good thoughts on under hood colors.
Well I tore into it today. The big clunky looking on is the three parts to the left and above the channel locks. The smaller black one is more linear and to the right. I noticed the clunker basically had an elbow threw the big space. Didn’t make a lot of since to me but I had an idea and a grinder...
Inside that big pot looking but I found this! perfect! Ive yet to measure but I’m thinking cut it down to the bead of that inner circle and I’ve got my filter top! the little stubs poked out inside the cavity. I noticed some gummy oil stuff in there so maybe there’s some Perforation and the tubes were for... fuck who knows LOL. Everything g else is in the trash. Normally I’d hang onto every scrap and piece but I’ve got enough random scraps to move around.
So the second half is taking this cut off from the big clunker (tm) and using it to transition this carb hat to round tube. the rubber is pretty shot. Thinking about replacing it with leather or? Any ideas? either way this should speed up fabrication and it’s more old parts being used. These actually Came off the scrap pile lol
Nothin new. Waiting on a friend to have a few minutes to tig breather parts together. Spring is near and I can’t wait to roll this thing outside!
Hmmm need to make some tabs to bolt that lower splash pan on under the grill and get some clamps back. Back and forth between stock and just making something that works
Gathered a few more parts today and Matt @IronTrap posted the video of him replacing his wood B pillars with box tube in the 5 window getting some good ideas there. Really want to beef up my B pillars and how they tie into the subframe so I’m looking forward to the next installment as well. should have air cleaner and trans updates soon
@Six Ball ill keep some wood and have considered adding some but in general the simpler/ stronger route sure seems to be metal 90% of the time
I'm trying to get my shop set up so I have room for the frame, work bench, tools new and old wood not stacked on each other. 50 years of junk collection in the way.
Alright got a few more parts and mocked up the empty case to stand back and smile at it 39 case and double detent top, 32-4 clutch arm For the added length for leverage . Should make the slave cylinder we work easier is the thought. need to fix this little bit up but over all everything is in excellent shape. Need to block Up the rear of the engine and pull the 46 Trans out of the car and start tearing it apart for its guts also got a pair of 28/9 fuel necks to add to the aprons to fill the saddle tanks. Never noticed but the slight slant will be perfect for dunking the pump into it.
Well got some parts back to mock up and tweak some more with the air cleaner set up. Initially it was going to go forward then over. And while it clears the brakes better than this sideways position it looks like a dang space cannon with that 2 3/4 pipe pointing at you. I completely hate it. So I tried it sideways. This is just a lose mock up. It will come down further on the carb side and there is room for me to modify it and make it lower yet again. The filter side needs trimmed further back and the bracket heated and twisted a little more as well. I was hoping to keep that bead and maybe run a filter with a bigger diameter to suit but it’s much bigger than the bottom I wanted to use and I’m not sure it will clear. might shop around and see what filters are available in the diameter/ height and make a hammer form for a new bottom half of it will clear the hood side. you can see here the size difference anyhow I think I’m on the right track. The carb side has got a lot of ugly that needs taken care of but this is a step in the right direction. I’ll dig Into this more in coming weeks
Need to change the shape of the bottom of the carb hat. Thinking something like this will be the end result. Got a loose game plan
Not at all. It is being built as a serious driver so that function has to be up front. Anyone could stick a hokey little ineffective chrome thing on there.
Yeah I read about these motors being under carbed stock and every “normal” air cleaner choking out a stromberg so knowing the roads this will see. Some of them probably gravel. I knew it had to have a real filter. not a lot of room because of the master placement so I had to get creative. With just the hood top on you can’t even see it on the drivers side. But I still wanted it to be something that just felt like it was supposed to be there and possibly something that just kinda fades into the background. a lot of mocking stuff up and walking past it 30 times
