The red one on the bell housing is the one I call the rear engine mount. The green is the transmission mount. If you can't use the red one think about the two biscuit pads the pickups used. You'd need a pickup bell housing. I think I have an extra one. They could use some simple brackets to the frame. With two front mounts the rear mount & the trans mounting would be plenty steady. This is where split wishbones came from + making them too low. The suspension works better the way Henry designed them.

Yup. I’m gonna have to make it all. No hill for a stepper but 5 contact points/ mounts. That things not gonna go anywhere lol.

also wishbone has plenty of room un split thankfully my little trick has been working well

If it’s made from metal and even more so if it came off an old ford I don’t throw it away after to many years of saying “shit I should have kept that”

The stash needs gone through so I can remember what’s in there. Today as I looked for some engine mounts I thought may work for mock up I found
what I believe are the frame side of stock “mid mounts” for an A. I use quotations because I do t think they bolted to the drive train but possibly just had a rubber pad on them?

either way I’m thinking clean them up and they just may line up for stude mid mounts! IMG_1059.jpeg IMG_1058.jpeg mock up mounts? ^ I’ll round the corners and they should bolt right up. I’ll test fit them before I put the motor back in so I’m not fighting some old motor mount bolts leaning over a fender.
IMG_1060.jpeg Also I’m thinking this ground strap was run this way to limit rocking like mentioned recently.

I've never seen a ground strap used like that but it seems to be in the right location. You usually see them back near the starter.
Cool mount find. I like reusing stuff like that. Lord knows I have kept more than I'll ever use for anything except stumbling over. Almost anything can be used for that.

I keep a lot of neat shapped bends and brackets. Back before I had any sort of confidence shaping sheet metal I always looked for the right shape hiding in something else that already existed.

plus a reconfigured ford bracket sure looks a lot oiler than a chunk of angle iron 90% of the time. Hoping for some garage cleaning time tonight and a little prep for the next time I get work hours. Really hoping to have it in the car and on the ground by this time next week

Cleaning, yes, I'm going nowhere until I carve out some shop space. I agree about the angle iron. It is hard to make it look like a car part. If you can fool me it is OK! :D

Got the motor mounts off and the red “stands” clearanced so they 100% do bolt on. Cut the trans cross member and it still didn’t fit but it was closer. Pulled the whole thing twice and ended the day with it sitting on the floor and the trans cross member very cut and the front cross member trimmed more in the passenger side.

I’ve got to kinda walk the drive train in because it wraps around the steering column so the corner thst was presenting on the back passenger get side of the front cross member was an issue.

    whittling away. Getting closer.

I think it’s going to land with the valve covers just touching the firewall. I’ll get it mounted,
Mark where it rubs, pull it out and make some room for rumbling.

what that make this? 11 times in and out so far? lol 12th times the charm?

You spent a lot of time on the firewall before the Studebaker got here. This is old hat for you now.

@Bandit Billy on the upside tonight I realized if I wasn’t working around this existing cross member and just sat the drive train in and built around it I wouldn’t be able to get it back out lol.

one bite at a time :)

I have owned cars that were built by people who did just that! One of them is a General!
It's not a race, it's a frickin marathon! A never-ending sprint to an imaginary finished line drawn in the sand on a windy TROG beach.

Id like to take it to the gathering at the roc in 2025. But for now I’m trying not to think to much about that.

@Six Ball or any of the other stude guys, can you confirm whether or not the truck water pumps sit higher than the cars? I’ve seen it mentioned and possibly a photo from the 50’s but I’m not turning anything up today

The only water pump differences I know of is the heavy duty one used with superchargers, not more water more bearings to take the extra belt tension. As far as I know all of the housings are the same.

@Six Ball yeah I think maybe I imagined it lol. As of now if I use a mechanical fan it’s going to be a 13” diameter, I’m seeing a metal six blade available but I’m still looking for options to raise it up some.

Alright I’m gonna try to make an update post that is more photos than words! IMG_1120.jpeg IMG_1121.jpeg IMG_1122.jpeg I got the motor and trans in the car pretty much exactly where it needs to be. The tail shaft needs to drop at least 5 deg and I think the passenger side of the block needs to come up a smidge. But it’s basically there. Ended up offset to the passenger side which funny enough makes the passenger side exhaust tighter than the drivers side but this morning I put a stock exhaust manifold right on with no trouble. Once it’s raise up a hair I should gain a little more room. I’ll still build a header for it as the drivers side won’t clear a manifold and I would feel real silly running a header on one side and manifold on the other. Though I had considered making it a split manifold on the drivers side removing the far back port and making a Y on the head pipe to join it all.

more likely I’ll do something like these - see next post

Bill Ganahl posted this this morning and the headers jumped out at me. That basically what needs to happen on the passenger side and the drivers side will look similar to most flathead in a model A headers.

IMG_1123.jpeg IMG_1124.jpeg then I decided to clean shop it would be easier if I just put stuff back on the car now that it’s in a spot I can pause it for a moment. IMG_1125.jpeg IMG_1126.jpeg shots of the passenger hood side interference. I bet the valve cover could nest inside a stock louver but the rest won’t clear IMG_1127.jpeg IMG_1128.jpeg pretty damn close though. I’ve got a neat idea to clear it. IMG_1129.jpeg IMG_1130.jpeg Oh and mostly flat floor! You can see the toe board isn’t laying flat on the drivers side. I think the round top of the bell housing is just barely touching. I’m between the idea of using a router to make space on the back side of the toe board or making a hole with a metal cover as an access point to see in the clutch inspection hole. But
You can’t really see in there anyways. Floor boards are pretty easy to pull don’t know if it’s worth the extra effort to make an added panel.

Floor shifter should land pretty much where the old one was

got a neat idea to clear the hood side but tonight I’m gonna clean, bolt stuff back on and measure 100 things. Probably take a short break to attend to the 46’ then back on this after new years.

  22. I guess I should tune in more often, looks like that banger has transformed into a Stude!

@Dan Hay yeah one day of chasing @BigJoeArt through the hills in Oklahoma was enough to seal the deal.

It is really coming together and looks good. That is a lot to get under the hood. I hope you work it out. Are you planning to use the Jeep floor shift? If so there is a bit of inside work on the transmission, but it saves a lot of space on that side by removing all that linkage. I have an article of what has to be done.

@Six Ball yup T-90 I think I’ve saved the articles I’ve found. Seems pretty easy to find the parts needed and pretty straight forward to convert. Should land the shifter basically where the 39 was previously. Thinking I’ll bend up a similar shaped shifter for it or adapt one to it.

should be able to mount the parking brake in the same fashion I had planed previously as well.

I agree. I want to mount the brake handle on mine too. I even thought about putting the OD in/out cable shifter on the gear shift like the old 2 speed axle shifters were mounted on trucks. One of the next things I should do is put my transmission together. It would clean up a little shop space and I'd quit tripping over the case bolted to the adapter.

@nrgwizard yeah I had a more elaborate plan but after about 4 hours of obsessing over how to make it I did a photo rendering and realized it was pretty ugly lol. That happens some times.

@redzula feels like we booth have an equal shot at making it or not lol

I was thinking teardrops, but then the louvers need to be arranged correctly - if any are used.
