The Studebaker Brothers are why God created mills, lathes, & welders.
When we first put my son's 289 together I had a new bendix drive so I put it on the starter. I didn't drive the pin in quite far enough so after the engine started the gear could not return. While it was running the questioned the noise. The next time we tried to start it we found out what it was. It had destroyed the armature. They are not made to turn the rpm the engine does. Even at idle. :(
What would be the big deal with going with a 12v starter & flywheel?

Well I finally found someone who has drip rails in stock! After a couple years of not very agressive looking for good stock ones and over a year and a half of Mac’s having my order on back order before they ultimately canceled my order with out letting me know Snyder’s comes threw and they should be here tomorrow!! Super excited to have this puzzle piece acquired.

next is the starter, I’ve got a lead on a maybe in the pacific north west I need to call and have been. Emailing back and forth with the mini starter guys. Figure even if I find a stock one and pass on the mini that at least it will be an option for other guys moving forward.

    updates as they come :)

still pretty shitty outside but the temps are up so I think I’ll sneak some garage time in today.

For shits and grins here are some numbers and measurements I sent over to the mini starter guys this morning to see if it’s feasible to have them put one together Untitled_Artwork.jpeg Untitled_Artwork.jpeg
Mounting flange to flywheel and flywheel width at teeth if that’s not obvious.

turns out I’m really only looking for one starter the other two are for the 12volt engines/ later flywheel

I can't believe this is so hard but a lot of metal has been scrapped since anyone made a 6v Studebaker starter. :(

Got my drip rails! The fine folks at Snyder’s had my order taken and me off the phone in under 5 minutes, about 48 hours later a 90” long packing tube arrived! And they thick tapped a board to the entire length of tube so it wasn’t going to get bent!

Satisfied customer and I haven't even opened it yet. IMG_2150.jpeg

I think over the last 30 years or so I have rounded up all the Genuine Chevy parts I need. Now I just need to dig them out of the mess and put them together.

    Details lol

another dead end on finding a stock starter.

I think at this point I may have to expand my search to include a later 12 volt flywheel. If I change fly wheels I should be able to use the jeep starter.

what a pain in the ass.

I sent him an email about the 6 volt starter this afternoon. He’s out of town to the roadster show so I’ll likely have to wait for a reply.

I’ve got a list of leads to call tomorrow and see what turns up

Heard from Bob this morning, he thinks he has what I need!

I also got the spray out for the body color in my hands. Buddy nailed it! I’m so excited about it. It’s been years of trying to find a match or formula. My camera could take a clear photo in the dark so I had to kinda trick it to show how different this paint looks in direct light and in the shadows. Should be amazing with black fenders etc IMG_2278.jpeg IMG_2277.jpeg

I probably missed something here but couldn’t you just modify a 12 starter with a different gear on it? Or a spacer to make it the right depth?

Where are they? There have to be thousands if them laying around. Have you got on every HAMB thread that comes up in a Studebaker search in hopes someone has missed this thread? Have you posted on the Srudebaker Drivers Club site and the other Studebakde club site. (don't tell them it is for a non-stock Studebaker) Get a new copy of if Turning Wheels and check the classified adds. Call anyone who in selling Stude parts of that vintage. These guys know each other.

I’m waiting to hear back from another hopeful lead.

So far I’ve talked to I think 11 different people, I’ve been looking in varying degrees of effort since October. I’ve got a good 9-10 more names/ places to try if this one doesn’t work out.

I'll email Terry. He was not at our Inliner meeting Saturday. Maybe he can get me into the stash in Carson city.
Will a 12v ring gear fit your flywheel?

I think the diameter is different so I would need either a 6 volt manual trans starter or a 12 volt starter for a manual and flywheel.

@dumprat ive considered it. The shaft size, and attachment method are different between the 6 and 12 volt starters so I can’t just swap one for the other. The 6 volt shaft is larger so if I put the gear from one on a 12 volt starter I’d have to make up the in between.

I haven’t come across a good reference/ chart for the gears to see if there’s one that would work from another application, maybe a starter rebuilding shop would have one in a book?

either way for now I’m going to continue chasing leads. Something will pop up eventually

@Tim given that prestolite probably made the starter anyway I’m sure there will be something that will work. 12v international armature with an AMC housing with one ford cap and a Chevy bendix or something nice and easy…..
