I'm shopping for a laptop to go wireless and mobile and increae my productivity (I'm going to be spending 6-8 hours per day browsing the internet), and I can't afford to waste time with slow-loading pages etc.

Question: what super, super-duper-duper high-speed internet is available for the wireless laptop user.

FWIW, I am currently looking at a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop with 2.1GHz processor, 2G RAM, 100G 7200 RPM hard drive, a wireless card that handles b and g, a 256MB NVIDA video card, etc. I'm planning on investing in SPEED.

But I'd like some opinions here... please respond only if you have BLAZING FAST internet, or have first-hand experience with the same and know exactly what is involved in getting that. Also please bear in mind I am asking for info that will pertain to a wireless laptop user.

    THANKS A MILLION!!!

How do you plan to connect? Are you going to be home with a wireless network, hardwired to a modem, wireless at work, wireless at a coffee shop?

90% of your speed is your connection. There are details like browser, but those battles are blown out of proportion.

What I've got setup at home is a cable modem hooked up to a 802.11g wireless router with MIMO. MIMO is multiple input multiple output, it's the new trick **** when it comes to networking. It actually uses interference to BOOST speed and distance by reflecting the signals off all the **** in your way to get to you better. Good stuff. When buying a router, MIMO would be listed as a feature, it's not a brand or style.

What it comes down to is how you plan to connect, I can't help you out much farther outside of that. There are ways to tweak any connection to be fast aside from dialup, but it's all in which one. Post or PM and we'll get you sorted out.

Well, for now, I figured I'd mainly just use the signals I find in coffee shops or wherever I may roam.

But I am open to anything you might be able to plainly state to tell me what's the shiznit when it comes to speed.

I'll check into MIMO. What router do you have?

    Any other info?

    Thanks!

You buy speed from your internet provider. Most have at least a couple different tiers of service. For the home user we, Brighthouse Networks sell cable internet with 3 different tiers,(upload X download)

    #1) 256K X 128 K @$26.00 per month
    #2) 5 Mb X 384 K @$44.95 per month
    #3) 8 Mb X 512 K @$59.95 per month

You as the consumer then have to choose which tier of service you are willing to pay for.

If you are a business or run a business out of your home we have 8 different cable tiers PLUS we offer unlimited FIBER. I can offer anywhere from a 1500 K X 256 K for $54.95 to ONE Gig for $77,000 per month:eek:

You get what you pay for:D

Denise, I have never heard of that!!!! I am not yet ready to set up my own home connection (I'm living in a dorm room at the moment), but I hope to be ready in a year. Where can I get more details in the meantime????

When you move into your own place you will have choices for your internet provider. Before you sign any lease or buy a house/condo make sure cable internet is an option and that you don't move into a place that only has dial-up as an option. That internet provider will give you your speed options, it varies from provider to provider.

side note: I was the first one in my company to sell fiber to a customer in our footprint and I was, at the time, the newest in our department. I LOVE my job!:D

Well, I'll certainly keep you in mind for when that day comes! In the meantime, do you have a website available so that I can start learning more? Thanks!
