I would like to decrease the width of my rear tires by a smidge. Currently, I have 255 tires mounted on 8" rims. If I were to mount the tires on 7" rims, how much would that effect the overall width? I'm just looking for a little tiny bit of clearence so I can get the truck a little lower without rubbing.

    Thanks,
    Ed

Downsizing the rims won't decrease tread width, so I ***ume you're hoping to decrease sidewall "bulge". Narrower rims might indeed provide a "smidge" more clearance - but that's about all. I'd say your best bet - since you're getting new rims anyway - is to get wheels with less offset (and narrower too, if you still feel that's necessary), then you can be sure.

As far as approriate wheel width for a given tire - I don't like to go with a wheel that's more than an inch under/over tread width for the street. Any more than that can lead to excessive wear - and/or ill handling.
