i just got done painting my chevy it is bagged with stock rear end and 205 75 15 tires but it is hard to get the back tires to squeeze up in between fender well and rear end,i have to take my bags loose so the rear end will drop...just wondering if anybody else had this problem

  2. My '53 is not bagged, but I usually have to jack up the body and let the rear hang to change my rear tires.

Yep, it a squeeze to get them on and off, I jack up the frame/body, let the axle hang, unbolt the wheel and remove it from the lug studs, then tilt the bottom of the wheel inwards and the top of the wheel outwards then it will just clear the body.

that's with a 215/70/15 which is shorter than your tire.

  4. I just hung the 235/75-15 tires on the '59 Ford last night. If the car was on the ground, I may have had an advantage, but it was up on stands. I think it would be okay jacked up from one side. I let the air out of the tires, got them on and filled 'em back up.

I am working on a bagged 51 where you need to undo the bags and drop the rear to change a tire.

The 6.70-15 is only a little easier. It is an inherent problem with the fenders. I have taken to installing Slam Specialties SS bags. They are 1" taller than the others. For your car a 7" bag should do the trick. Just make sure that the shocks are long enough to get full lift.

I have a 50 Chevy. I have a late rear with CE springs which are supposed to lower the car 3 inches. I've also got 3 inch blocks installed. I had the frame on stands and let the rear hang. However, it won't hang far because of the springs and blocks. I had to stay with the stock 5 inch rims and 205/70-15's. They'll go in but it's tight.

i looked at the specs and looks like all the ss series bags compress to the same height but the bigger diameter the higher lift

I'm running 215/75 15's on a bagged 53 and have to drop a shock and a bag to get a wheel out, it's a bitch. I've got a gambino notch etc and slam re6 bags I think

I realize that this is an old post but this question has come up several times in my car community.
I came up with a solution..... at least one that worked for me.

Instead of bolting the top side of the rear bags in with bolts , I used all thread and wing nuts to secure the tops. This lets the bag to drop lower thus allowing the tire to come out of the wheel well. The bag stays aligned with the upper holes and will self seat when the car is lowered off the jack. Just re-tighten the wing nuts (or whatever type nut you decide to use) and you're back on the road.
Doing it this way also keeps me from having to be under the car to disconnect stuff. (not where I want to be on an uneven, busy, rainy, no shouldered road.) UNSAFE to be sure. It can be done from inside the trunk.

This is my first attempt to fix this problem, and it does work, but if there is a better way, I need to know about it.
