I finally had to give up those nice looking classic wide white walls for anything that will cost less and have a recourse in case I have problems. On top of being very smooth and costing hundreds less, I have a place to go for tire repairs and rotations. I lost my classic look but it was worth it in the end.
I could live with the skinny whitewalls, but the 1984 Cadillac hubcaps really should go. Looks like a real nice car otherwise.
Car looks nice either way. You probably bought the new tires for about 1/3 of what the wide whites would have cost you.
I love the WWWs but I can sure understand the economics of it. I really don't understand why WWW should cost so much more as I believe all tires come with a white layer under the sidewall. All they would need is a shave.
A shaved tire has about a 2" wide white stripe, not all the way down to the bead, but somewhat above the bead. And you can buy that style wide whitewall brand new, for about the same price as a regular blackwall or skinny stripe tire. Example in the link below. https://www.ebay.com/itm/174592040331?hash=item28a67f1d8b:g:BaYAAOSwmpBf~IAm It's the correct reproduction bias ply wide whitewalls that are expensive, since they're made from scratch to look exactly like a period tire.
Well thanks for clearing that up. Unfortunate that I was mistaken as I was hoping for a more reasonable approach to the kingdom of WWWs.
You could have your thin whites shaved down, Any whitewall has a layer of white under the black. Problem is, finding an old school tire shop that would do that sort of thing. I know this blows out your budget, since you mentioned economics, I'd save up for a more skinny white friendly wheel like chrome steelies.
Wheel Vintiques makes a real nice chrome steel wheel, Series 64, Summit sells it. They look exactly like the vintage wheels, even the vent is curved like the old Kelsey Hayes steel rims. If you buy the tires from Diamond Back, they can either remove all the sidewall lettering or open up the white wall. Because like Dan said, that white wall is actually large..
At this point in time, I'm surprised that you can even locate the skinny white walls at an affordable price. I asked the local tire shops about skinny white wall 14" tires for my daily driver and they couldn't locate any. Sent from my SM-T350 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
You can still get Port-a-Walls. There's even a 'Port-a-Wall Store' on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/stores/PORT-...6D90A9378?ref_=ast_bln&productGridPageIndex=2
I think that looks great. Makes it look more streamlined. Take it from a guy who has spent more time then I care to admit cleaning WWW's.
I like the wide whites better but as someone else said, these make your hubcaps pop! Over all, I'd say it looks Great!
