As far as I know, the Kal Tire retread plant in Chilliwack is still doing it here in BC. You can drop your tires at any Kal Tire, and they can send them there, but they wont know anything about it, you have to contact the re-tread plant first and set it up with them.

Any big truck shop should have the equipment, also those who do 4WD work.

Tire shaving is more common now because of modern/sensitive ABS brake systems. All the tires have to be within a certain percentage/measurement of height/tread wear, (depending on vehicle specs) and if, for example, one new tire must replace one on an older set, it may have to be shaved to match the remaining set for a properly functioning ABS. I just went through this on my wife's OT at our local Tire Rack.
Problem is, they won't shave tube tires like the 'stones on my '32.

Yes,it was a common thing for big trucks years ago. Maybe ask some truck repair shops around your location ,they will know.

    Hello,

Back in 1959, we found out that some of the new tires, Firestones for the Impala, were not completely round. They were hard to balance. So, our mechanical, genius, friend in Los Angeles told us to go to this place in Torrance to get the tires shaved. We laughed at the thought, but when it was explained to us that those factories pop out so many tires, that it was bound for a lot of tires to show up off kilter.

This place had a machine that showed how much of the tire was off and where it was not round. In driving the car, it just did not show up as a bump or rock when rolling. But, when the tire was spun on this machine, it showed up as slightly coned on one side. The tire was spun and the machine shaved off some of the rubber tread to get it even. The other tires were in the same shape, so, they got the same treatment.

The feeling you get when those shavings come off was..there go the total miles on the tread. But for smooth rolling tires and easier balancing, this was the way to go. When it was done, the Impala still drove like it did, but deep inside, we knew it was going to be better in the long run. On the street, we could not feel the difference. For some reason, those early Firestones and Goodyear tires were usually not perfectly round. Most of the manufacturer's tires were the same shapes, not always true.

When I bought my first set of Inglewood, Redline, Pos A Traction Wide Tires for the 65 El Camino, I drove over to the same tire place and had the whole set trued and balanced. For wide tires, it did feel different after the truing and balancing. Since this was a pure highway driver, it did make a difference. Those expensive wide tires left a lot of rubber on the ground in order to get them even and true. We went through 2 complete sets over the years owning the el camino with truing each set when new. They were great tires.

With the better technology on the newer tires, radial and others, they are less prone to odd shapes. But, truing them regardless of tube or not is a precautionary method for smoother driving and longer lasting tires. The next time you get new tires, watch them spin on the tire balancer. If you get the top quality tires, they are pretty even all around with minimal mismatches.

We used to do them in Concord, CA.; Concord Safety Center, East bay; owner's son turned business into a respected street rod shop.
Westbury Street Rods, Concord, CA. Greg Westbury, owner.
Someone told me he is truing tires with the original machine, from 1968...Hope this helps.
