After installing a 4" dropped axle on his '41 coupe the wheels are no longer able to turn very much during the the lack of fender clearance. Wheels are stock 16" and tires are Firestone 6.50, Deluxe Champion. He's now going for 15" wheels, but do you guys know what tire size that would look good and offer enough clearance to the fenders? He's looking at Firestone D C and Goodyear Super Cushion, both at 6.70. Problem is, when looking at the clearance as it is now, it looks really tight and the 6.70 is not that much smaller in diameter than the 6.50-16.
5.60 would be way to small right? 6.40 is another option but we can't find a decent looking tire with big enough white wall and we still think it would look rather small. As you know it's also about looks, and I really think the car is looking good with current wheels and tires.

So what do you think? 6.70 is such a common size but as I said; it looks like it's going to be really tight on this car.

    Thanks!

I'm running 205/75/15's on the front and 235/75/15 on the rear. the fronts barely clear on a turn. Has he got disc on the front. Usually they increase the track width a couple inches at least(mine almost 4"). A different backspace wheel may be the real solution. I'm running 15X6 wheels with 3" backspace . I'm planning to go to a different wheel to move my tires in a bit

  4. This may not address your wheel/tire question, but I wonder if your brother may have used the wider post-war axle rather than the much narrower one used pre-war? That may explain the lack of wheel and tire room.. Sorry if this is off the mark.

    Good luck!

    Thanks for the replies!
No, the car doesn't have discs. The axle is a Magnum and is supposed to fit '37-'41 Fords. Or is the axle for these cars available in two widths? The wheels he is buying are 5", I don't know the offset though.

  7. I think the '37 - '41 should be 48 1/2 inches kingpin to kingpin? Is there much room on the inside?
