Hey guys so I'm trying to figure out what is the correct tire size needed for my 54 customline. I have an i6 which I guess comes with 14" rims. The tires on them are P215/70R14's. these tires are rubbing the A-arm joint and carving into the back of the tires. A friend said that the back spacing on the rims could be wrong causing this issue. To rid of the problem I just picked up some 15" rims and tires (thanks Ken) the tires on these rims are P215/75R15's which are way taller compared to what's on it now. My question is which size tire is closer to being correct? what was the size of the tires in bias plys for the 14's and 15's? Thanks so much for the help = )
I've got f7814s, but 6.70-15 is what the car rolled off the line with, also there is a chart that has the radial crosses with that too if you want to run radials! I can find that chart if you want?
Cool thanks bro! So from what that's saying I should be around P205/75R15 or P215/70R15 and I'm at P215/75R15's is that a big difference? Sorry I don't know much about tires.
OK Solo, its time to get tire education 101 so click on this,http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/in...z7G0vXPF5RPVHdDSkKR2G!-1079291425!-1392350934 Since this Ol' Fart sold tires "back in the day" I'll add a little more the old 670X15 was actually an 85 series tire,so even though the 205/75/15 is supposed to be the modern replacement the section width and the tread width is wider and the height is shorter than the 670X15.Now,not all tire brands are the same specs you will find that the lower priced tires may have the same height but in order to maximize profits the width both section and tread will be less than a premium tire(saves on material costs). One example is the Coronell tire sold by Pep Boys these actually wear pretty well and are narrower than most other brands.
I have 205/70r15's on the front of mine and they are small tires (But tats the look I was going for) I have 235/75R15's on the back and they are a doozie to get under the fender well even with Airshocks.
One more quick way to get the differences in radial tire sizes is to actually calculate the size from the specs. For instance...using your first example of a 205/75/15 205 is the width in mm so you need to divide it by 25.4mm/in to get to inches 205/25.4=8.07" (overall width of the tire) 75 is your sidewall ratio so you need to multiply .75x8.07 to get sidewall height .75x8.07=6.053 (from wheel to edge of tread) There are effectively two sidewalls and one 15" rim that make up the total diameter so you need to put all that together 6.053x2=12.11, 12.11+15=27.11 (total diameter) So, that should be a tire that is basically 8.1" wide and 27.1" tall That is a way that you can quickly compare sizes and figure out what will work best as far as radial tires. As Jeff mentions, actual sizes will vary a little depending on brand, but that should get you close. I have driven lowered vehicles for years and it has always been important to be able to figure my own tire sizes based off how much room I have instead of what the guy at the tire store says I need...
Jeff you're awesome! Ok so now I understand a little better. I was just freaking out because of the huge difference of the tires I have. Well I'm glad to hear I'm on track now with what I purchased. Thanks again for all the wisdom everyone!
Thanks Guth! I understand what you're saying the only concern I have with these correct tires I purchased is the rubbing because I'm so low.
Jut put the new rims and tires on! They work perfect and are P215/75R15's Just wanted to share a photo.
solo I run coker wide whites on my 54, 205/75-14 on 7 inch rims with 3 1/2 back space no rubbing problem. Tires are 25.8 tall. On my 55 I have coker wide white that are 205/75-15 on same size rims Tires are 27.8 tall. The 15's are closer to the original tire size in height but are wider.
Yeah I think the issue was the 14" rim itself and not the tire. With these P215/75R15's I'm having no issues. Now if I could just afford the fatty white walls lol.
I like it George, but too many doors. Maybe you should make it a really long 2 door. Easier for you to get into and more leg room.
Haha thanks but not thanks. I look at it this way if there was a bus full of hot chicks that broke down I'd be able to take more with me where as people with two doors would only be able to fit a couple lol.
Nah she's pretty cool, I'm a hairstylist in the day and a photographer who is around women all day and she's cool with it. I shoot for a website and all their super hot models so the school bus thing would fase her at all.
