Sorry to hear about the tire slash. On the up side, maybe the whitewall will look good hanging on the wall or as a coffee table with a piece of glass over it
If it is only a hole you might patch the tire and also run a tube as well, but if is more than that, for safteys sake scrap it.
Slashed most likely not. I raced dirt bikes as a kid, spokes and tubes, jumped 2 cars, jumped a creek, jumped garbage cans, never popped a tube. There's a band that goes inside to protect the tube from the spokes.
The original poster makes a good point- How to tell who out here knows his shit and who doesn't. I've read a lot more bad advice than good in these threads. Everyone must think they're experts in all things (obviously a guy thing). Of course, with something insignificant like the poster's life at stake, let me tell you how I fixed the tire on my Schwinn route bike in 1962..... IS it safe to patch his tire?? The one I've never seen? I don't know. See guys, that wasn't so hard.
It is not about being a "Expert". It's about using common sense. If the tire is damage why mess with it. Do the safe thing, the right thing and buy a new tire. Simple.
Well, sure. But now, if he puts a new tire on there, it will increase the vehicles ride heigth which will alter the braking characteristics, so he'd better be safe and install new brakes all around. Of course, to be absolutely POSITIVE all is safe, he may as well replace the engine and transmisson with brand new, as well. The guy had a legit question, balancing safety with cost. The fact that none of us has SEEN the tire, makes any answer given, shall we say... fresh from the ass?
I have owned my tire store for over 20 years and believe i very good background with this, that being said, tires that came with tubes in them should have tubes in them. radials are NOT recommend to have tubes, even if they are radial tubes, as per tire companies, so I will not install a tube in a radial either, the liabities is too great to take a chance on. on bais ply tires if you have a small hole or cut,1/4" or less, yes then patch it and tube it and it should be fine
I think you have the common sense, when you see a 40's split rim, on a '49 Jeep Pickup that isn't licensed, to realize this isn't quite the normal scenario. I meant no offense to you Adam
I'd be interested in a picture of the inside of the tire, the damage to the sidewall, cord-damage, proximity to the bead, the road he drives to work on, speed limit signs along the way, the child seat in the rear of his car, his bank account balance........ and then, maybe, I'd presume to give him advice.
------------------------ Ditto on that. A tube will allow the tire to retain air even with a damaged sidewall, but the sidewall is what bears the load of the car and by design, constantly flexes and moves as the tire rotates. Even a small cut in the sidewall is a weak point and will spread due to movement and heat from flexing and will lead to sudden failure. By the way too, when a tire with a tube fails at any sort of speed , they don't usually just go flat like a tubeless tire - rather they tend to explode violently, making control nearly impossible. I know tires are expensive and having one slashed by some A-hole really sucks, but don't do it. Mart3406 ==================
I agree with everything which isn't bolded. WTF are you talking about? This is exactly the kind of "bad advice" I was referring to which runs so rampant out here.
I am one of those that posted "in favor" of tubes but two cuts, three inches long, in the shape of an "X"!?!?! I've got one word for you "JUNK"
I'm an FNG, so i have to ask, whats the deal w/ the popcorn? I've seen it several times, all after arguments that go on and on, but i can't quite grasp it, but I think i'm close. Sorry for the stupid question, Adam
Heh! Not looking to stir it up (much). It just bothers me when someone asks for help, every idiot in the world has the answer. These aren't opinions we're talking about, they're freaking CARS. They can kill people. So this bird thinks that (quite beyond all laws of physics and engineering) when a tube gets a nail in it it somehow becomes a small, nuclear device. He decides to post it as authorative, with no supporting data. So now, when faced with the question of whether to put a new tube in little Johnny's Huffy, some other Hamber remembers this thread and rushes out to buy Johnny two new tires and a Nomex suit, thinking- "Golly... I read it on HAMB, where they know so much about cars!" So, I'm not trying to stir sheeit up, but if WE don't call BS, out of politeness or apathy or whatever, we're just hurting ALL of our credibility. Nothing personal at all. Pass the butter.....
I hope the ass holes are caught. Hell they might have been caught and we will never see or hear from them again lets hope.
