I'm of the mindset anymore if you started a business where you did OK work. Not awesome, not shotty, but just solid work and followed through on your commitments 80% of the time you would clean house in business. I personally don't care if something is really cheap or really cool if I'm never going to get it. I'll buy from somebody I can trust anyday.

I've started doing as much as I can myself as I get so irritated by companies that don't deliver on dates and sell ****py products for top dollar. As far as I can tell you can't judge product quality by price anymore. Also if it's really going to take a month to do X, just tell me so I know it's going to take a month.

I hear ya I get very tired of waiting on other people!

I as a body shop owner , and kustom car builder. the later is supposed to be for friends and myself, but has exploded. I can't find any compitant help, and am soo sick of dealing with all the employees, that I am doing what I can by myself. I know it takes a little longer, but I too require sleep and some time to myself to keep from going insain. I do what I can, and try to out source a few things, which something always happens. I just ordered a 4 link kit from suicide door .com because that is what the ch***is guy wanted because it is hell for stout. they told me 2 weeks back log. no problem, well, 2.5 months later still nothing.... so it puts the whole build behind. does the other people scheduled in understand? NO... and to top it all each customer wants too.....oh, hey while it's in the shop can we do this.... can you do more..... so bag on the behind body man, because he doesn't really need sleep, and if you keep useing him as a punching back and getting him down, he will probably do you a better job. And I forget that the world is going to end if you don't have your special baby at that one show, so you can show everybody what you have done! err, I mean what checks you have written. the only way I know of getting stuff done right is to do it yourself, which is nearly imposible to do everything. so lighten up it will be ok...... you can only do so much..

Yep, thats why my projects will be getting single stage paint. I know I can shoot single stage and keep sanding & shooting it until I get all the dust & **** out of the finish. Not high tech but its under my control.
got my welder, got my body hammers, can already build engines, got a friend with a lathe that Im learning to use, only hold up is my time and that doesnt cost me anything if I dont get it done.

For shop owners, communication can help most situations in a major way, you get held up also, if thats communicated to the car owner they dont stop by and see zero progress. Theres always A holes out there that dont understand but the majority of people just want to know whats going on.

  7. I've learned from the past never pay for anything in full. Once you do there is no incentive for the other party to complete their work quickly as they've been paid and looking for their next influx of money. If someone insists thats the way it is, I walk out and go elsewhere. Needing full payment up front is a red flag to me. 100% of the time I've been burned paying in full for parts ordered or work to be done. Now I leave the least money possible as a deposit and even tell the person to their face that there has to be some money held back to insure they do what is expected so they have to finish work or get parts ordered in a timely fashion to get their balance. You need to take charge when your're the guy handing over the dough.
